On average, over 250 babies are born each minute, and 3% - 4% are born with health problems. My focus is to play an active role in our future society by supporting disadvantaged children to have a fair chance at life or as close to that as possible with the help of myself and other future nurses. Growing up in a huge family, with many little children running around, I developed a passion for taking care of children and supporting their well–being. I was called the ‘baby monster’. Having the talent to understand different children’s needs and preferences, making sure they are comfortable in the environment and ensuring that they trust in me as a person as well as a paediatrician is a key role that I play.
Children’s Nursing is a rewarding experience due to the acts of service for both the patients and their families. It is a huge responsibility which I have personally witnessed with my cousin Medina, with her complicated medical conditions including Down’s Syndrome and heart issues. Accompanying her to her appointments has been an eyeopener as being in the environment where nurses work with compassion to improve the quality of a child’s life and to see them through to the next stage. This has played a key role in motivating me to pursue this career. Children’s Nursing can be very emotionally challenging and there’s a variety of skills that are needed when working with children. Nurses need to be able to communicate well with both the children and well and their families, without communication there is a major barrier between the patient and the paediatrician. Paediatric nursing can be a tiring and draining career but is an overall rewarding experience and job.
I am currently studying Level 3 Childcare and Health and Social Care. Studying Childcare has taught me that every child is unique and has different needs and preferences. Childcare also helped me understand how to deal with all kinds of human behaviour and emotions and it makes an impact when it comes to the quality of support and advice that will help me every day. Forming attachments is essential between the patient and the nurse. On the other hand, Health and Social Care has taught me how to think logically and propose reasonable solutions as well as producing accurate records and making informed choices. Learning new theories and perspectives helped me to expand my mindset and view scenarios differently. Being a paediatric nurse isn’t all about ensuring the child’s needs are met, it’s by getting to know the children as well as understanding them as more than just a patient.
Taking a glance at my experience will show my passion for working and supporting children, and my commitment to pursue children’s nursing as my chosen career. I opted to work with children at all ranges 0 – 5 years and with varying disabilities and health problems such as autism, down’s syndrome, asthma etc, building my knowledge on how to handle situations and challenges that may come along the way. I completed my work experience at Loving Hand’s Nursery, where I gained knowledge and a variety of experiences with children aged 6 months – 5 years. Apart from the work aspect, I have a 2-year-old cousin who has Downs Syndrome, from when she was born, I have been observing her growth and development with the different nurses as well as her mother. Whilst occasionally babysitting her I gained new skills and experiences which enabled me to take care of her whilst knowing when to feed her medicine and teach her certain skills e.g. mark making and walking. I also gained knowledge by learning sign language and teaching her simple one which will benefit her in the future.
I value the fact that you have taken time to read my personal statement and I hope that I have given a powerful enough standing to be a prospective student. I look forward to studying at your institution.
