Becoming a Registered Nurse has been one of the most fulfilling, rewarding, and at times, challenging accomplishments of my life. For the past three years I have been working as a medical surgical RN on a unit with an emphasis for patients who have suffered a stroke. In that time frame I have seen teamwork, dedication, and successful nursing care provided. However, I have also seen sadness, despair, and grief come to many. Often times these struggles are due to people letting their health issues evolve into something that sometimes is not manageable. Sadly, this usually occurs simply due to the fact that they cannot afford or get access to preventative health care. As someone who has not had the financial means to seek medical attention when needed, I feel I can relate to these patients, and hope to become an Adult Nurse Practitioner and provide primary care to those in need.
Being a Nurse is more then just being a caregiver. We must provide emotional and physical support not only to our patients, but to the loved ones involved in the care. Nurses are there through all the hardships and tragedies, while also being present to celebrate the hurdles overcome and miracles life can present. Being a Registered Nurse allows me to care for people who sometimes are at their lowest points in life, provide them with support, and be a friend, caregiver, and listener when needed. As an RN I have the opportunity to leave lasting and memorable impressions all while making a difference in someones life. It is through my compassion, my concern, and my dedication, that makes me confident in knowing I am making the right decision in pursuing my dreams by becoming an Adult Nurse Practitioner.
Today in all health care settings, we see many cultures and different ways of life. Culture competency is something extremely important to keep in mind while treating and providing care for others. Culture competence is being aware of ones own personal views and limitations, all while being able to understand and be compassionate towards others and their cultural preference. It is important to keep in mind and be aware of the diverse and immense cultures that are present and prevalent in the heath care setting today. Certain cultures find eye contact as an insult and a way of being rude, while others hug and embrace all who provide care. It is crucial as a health care provider to be familiar and aware of these differences all while making sure no judgments are made and care is not affected. We must be sure we are always aware and knowledgeable of these differences, as well as hold the right attitude and professionalism while caring for patients of varied cultures.
Along with being competent and responsive to all cultures, it is crucial to be ethically sensitive while caring for patients. By being ethically sensitive, one is providing care safely using the utmost respect, honesty, and transparency. Being someone who is at the bedside and gives care first hand, I have had to put myself in my patients’ shoes and empathize with time. Being ethically sensitive means I must understand a person’s situation and be aware of all my decisions and moral implications.
