I have always loved helping people and have a desire to make a difference to others' lives. I frequently played nurse as a child, leading me to want to build my future upon the career as a children's nurse. I believe that the top qualities of a child nurse are compassion, empathy and kindness. I understand that when a patient is in pain the key to helping is to be knowledgeable and understanding.
In high school, I took part in a mentorship program, where I would assist first year pupils with their transition into high school. I was fond of this role as it allowed me to pass down my knowledge and gain confidence. I also took part in extracurricular activities such as running the dance club for the younger years which improved my leadership and communication skills. During my time in high school I was also a prefect, meaning I was frequently using skills such as initiative and problem solving.
Whilst at high school, I participated in a week’s work experience in the maternity ward at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. I learnt how fast paced the nursing environment can be and how remaining calm in intense situations is one of the most important things a nurse can do. During my experience I had the opportunity to shadow a midwife, assist with a water birth, and bathe and feed some of the babies. I was allowed to observe the type of work done in NICU, showing me how much hard work and professionalism is involved in a nursing career.
Throughout 2019 I worked as an activities group leader at PGL, a children’s activity camp in Surrey. This job intensified my desire to work with children in the future. I honed my organisational and time management skills by organising and leading children’s activities. I also provided pastoral care to the children and helped them overcome their fears. The job taught me that every child is unique and needs a different level of care. I was able to recognise that what would work with one child may not work with another. I also organised evening entertainment for the children and liaised with teachers and other party leaders and parents which helped further develop my communication skills.
Whilst there I completed eight hours of first aid training, specifically for children and young people. Working with children has made me front and centre to several emergency situations and has taught me that using my initiative and responding quickly to emergencies is essential.
I am currently working as a personal carer before I return to work at PGL for the summer. I provide care both individually and as part of a team depending on the needs of the client. During my time as a carer I have gained competence in basic nursing skills such as administering medication, changing dressings, moving and handling clients, hygiene, and first aid. Time management is a very important part of the job as my clients depend on me to be with them at the scheduled time. I am used to working unsocial hours and long shifts, and am flexible whilst on call. The job has taught me commitment to my clients and that building trust and respect with them is vital. I treat all my clients with compassion and dignity.
I am organised, hard-working, and determined, and I know I will excel at child nursing. It is a privilege to be allowed into a patient's life at such a personal level and I understand how challenging and rewarding working with children will be and hope this application will be the first step in achieving my goal of being a children’s nurse.
