Whether we are conscious of it or not, we all engage with business every day of our lives. Form small transactions in a store to working in a professional environment, the numerous ways that business interact with and shape our lives are fascinating to me. It is for this reason that business management, the study of how successful businesses thrive, has so attracted me, and for this reason I wish to study this course at your university.
I believe that an individual that is successful in the world of business not only has a passion, but discipline and knowledge that can enable them to realise their passion. For this reason, over the last few years of my life I have attempted to widen my personal experience of the world, in order to be the best applicant I can be for this course. This is centred around my schooling in Repton, where I study Business, Politics, and photography. Business Studies has taught me the functional ideas that I believe underpin any successful firm: making me comfortable discussing the inner workings of a business whether they are a multinational conglomerate or a local corner shop. I believe that in either of these situations, the underlying principles that allow successful business to thrive remain constant, and it is this constancy that so interests me about the nature of profit-making firms.
I have attempted to stretch my interest by regularly engaging with the wider economic world, in order to understand the global trends that shape and shift the world of business. In order to do this, I have regularly been reading the Economist, as I find their reporting of economic issues to be an incisive and clear depiction of the real world. Most recently, I read a report the magazine wrote on the nature of America’s ‘Online Giants’; Google, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook. These firms are intriguing to me as they possibly offer an example of modern monopiles, dominating their respective field yet being very hard to pin down with regard to placement in the world. Yet despite some calls, as are outlined in the report, to break up these large firms, I believe that their capital investment in the world of electronics and communications pushes forward the world of business rather than hindering it, making them worthwhile.
My study of Politics has allowed me to better contextualise my study of business, by highlighting the external factors that may influence the success of a firm in a given location and political atmosphere. As someone who was born in Turkey, the recent questions over Brexit raise important concerns not only over the willingness of Britain to accept foreign investment and interaction, but over the economic future of firms in the UK. The relevance of this to Business Management was shown to me when I undertook an internship programme at Zmpay Global, a cross-border payment firm that regular deals with clients from around the world. I believe that in this time, more than any other, Britain is faced with economic threats yet also a strong sense of opportunity, and I hope that studying business will make be better able to understand the possibilities that exist for this country outside of the European Union.
Outside of the classroom, I believe that my extra-curricular exploits have developed a personal character and discipline that has informed and helped my academic pursuits. Sport in particular has been a massive source of personal development for me, and I have engaged in a wide variety of activities in my time, from being a licenced basketball player in Turkey, to competing in MMA, to holding a handicap of 18 in golf. The combination of personal training yet also teamwork has taught me invaluable lessons about interacting with others, lessons that translate into the world of business. In addition to this, I have engaged with volunteer work, specifically cleaning beaches in Turkey. This experience taught me a lot about the value of good business ethics, specifically when it comes to protecting the environment.
My passion for business is well supported by my individual determination and experience. My aim now is to achieve the best degree possible at your institution, in order to enter the world of business with an understanding that can better my firm, and society at large.
