During my early schooling, I came across a book illustrating the different types of eyes within the animal kingdom and humans. I found it intriguing how vision is adapted according to the needs of each species. As I grew older I questioned how optical illusions are so perplexing, what causes colour blindness, and the structure of the eye that allows for sight. After witnessing my late grandmother suffer from multiple eye problems including, retinal detachment, cataracts and glaucoma, my attention extended to eye health. I was deeply disheartened by her life-changing conditions which made simple everyday tasks difficult; this coupled with my curiosity of the complex functioning of the eye has inspired me to study optometry. Science has always fascinated me. I like to explore and understand how science is applied in the real world. Learning biology gives me an insight into the interconnection of bodily systems; continuous responses of the eye to varying intensities of light and pressure and the effect body diseases have on cells and organs. I particularly enjoy Chemistry practical. I like the linkage between theory to observations through experiments, and the discipline involved when handling chemicals and apparatus appropriately. Mathematics gives me all round skills; problem-solving has taught me to think logically and apply analytics to data. I believe these skills will equip me well in the field of optometry.
After attending an optometry seminar, highlighting the advancing science through discoveries and evolving technologies such as Optical Coherence Tomography, I shadowed an optometrist at Boots Opticians. I discovered it to be a stimulating career requiring discipline, confidence and excellent social skills. The optometrist communicated clearly, maintaining eye contact; the tone and communication style changed according to age. Of significance is the dexterity I observed during the use of technical equipment and administering eye drops; I believe I will be capable of this due to my artistic skills. As a volunteer at The Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital, Kenya, it was satisfying to observe joy on patients’ faces after successful treatment. During the examination, the patient was made to feel at ease, and their concerns listened to patiently. I was particularly charmed by their intuition and ability to identify and respond to any apprehensions, especially the illiterate; who are tested in a special way. I learnt how certain eye problems are related to systemic diseases and autoimmune diseases, for example, scleritis. It was enlightening to see the patients being informed on how nutrition and hygiene contribute to eye health.
Music has instilled discipline and patience within me which I recognize as a key quality required in dealing with patients. Presently, I am pursuing ABRSM Grade 8 Piano which, indeed, is challenging requiring keen listening skills and meticulous hand agility, as well as playing violin in an orchestra, including performing in front of a large audience. My outdoor activities include field sports, camping, mountain climbing and completion of Gold Level of The Presidents’ Award. These activities have enhanced my leadership, teamwork and coordination skills, including perseverance to overcome obstacles and achieve my goals. As a prefect and peer counsellor, I am a role model for peers involving responsibility and exercising time management. Currently, I teach at a religious school after graduating from a ten-year course in Jainism; this is a rewarding experience, assisting in charity events and conversing with all ages.
Optometry is a demanding and dynamic course of which I possess the determination and discipline to succeed. My keenness centres on helping people and to further my scientific knowledge and its application. I am excited to encompass my diverse pursuits at university and explore new ones; furthering my life skills.
