For many years it has always been my desire to impact the world around me however, I was faced with one challenge – I did not know how. It was only on a Friday night when I chanced upon the legal drama “Suits” and I figured out “how”. After a few episodes, the series instilled in me a thirst for Law. I began to research and had to get off cloud nine as I discovered that the portrayal of the Law in “Suits” is far different from real Law. However, I knew- from my research- that the policy and law makers are the ones that change this world.
In preparation for this, the IBDP and its rigorousness has prepared me for the Law course. Studying subjects such as English Literature HL and History HL gave me analytical skills which are essential for research. My Literature HL class often had debates which has helped me sharpen these skills. In Music HL, I learnt patience and self-discipline which I believe are valuable skills for a Lawyer. Finally, in our TOK classes, I continued to learn more about the effects of morality and ethics on Law. Also, as a mark of my commitment to strive for academic excellence, I have received prizes in Music for 2 consecutive years as well as Mathematics Studies in the IBDP level. My consistency has caused me to be on the Academic Merit List from Grade 10-11.
Out of school I have participated in Model United Nations where I debated on world issues and gained argumentative skills. These skills I acquired shined through my writings in the 10th Edition School Magazine where I was a writer. I was also fortunate to attend the Oxford Scholastica programme to study Law where I became fascinated with the ethics and philosophy behind Law and more importantly, the cultural and moral implications in controversial areas: death penalty and life imprisonment. During the programme, we were presented with the challenge of running a mock trial where we modelled a case held at the International Criminal Court in a courtroom.
My experience, and drive to know more about the Law was the main reason why I interned at Lexkudoz, a Law firm in Ghana where I was able to observe and work on many cases with my supervisor. I became familiar to the different types of Law - Family Law, and Commercial Law. The internship was informative as it exposed me to the rules of the court in Ghana, as well as the daily life of a lawyer. My supervisor also held mock trails often to depict the court, which made me feel how it is to argue a case. Because of the impact it had on me as a prospective lawyer, I hope to attend another internship after my IBDP exam. Furthermore, the urge to fight and advocate for human rights pushed me to be a part of Amnesty International. Amnesty has worked on various projects including a campaign to promote anti – corporal punishment in public schools. Again, as the president of Pen in A Box – a student initiative structured to improve education for the deprived – it made me more sensitive to others’ situations.
The satisfaction which comes with every bow stroked and every key pressed was my motivation to not only be a member of the school orchestra and choir but also the music director of these two groups. I am currently a member of the Students’ Council serving as the Head Multi-Purpose and Dining Hall Executive. These many leadership roles have made me master the skill of organising large groups and also boost my confidence. Often times there were instances I faced challenges in these spheres of work, however, it gave me the chance to grow as an individual and learn how to adapt to every given situation. These leadership positions have improved my oratorical skills which I will definitely use in the courtroom. Also, I have received prizes in Music for 2 consecutive years as well as Mathematics Studies in the IBDP level. My consistency has caused me to be on the Academic Merit List from Grade 10-11.
Studying Law in the U. K will not only expose me to opportunities but also, offer me a range of skills which I can use to develop my country. Ghana practices the system of common law thus, studying Law in the UK will give me the necessary requirements to achieve my dream: changing the world one case at a time.
