My Idol in Public Service: Miriam Santiago

Who is your idol and why? In this essay I will talk about one of my idols, particularly in the realm of public service and empowerment, Miriam Defensor Santiago. She is a politician, professor, and public servant who is most notable for being the first Filipino to win a seat as a judge at the International Criminal Court. Throughout her political career spanning more than twenty years, Miriam has consistently proven herself as an honest, efficient, and excellent public servant, which is why the Filipino people admire her.

A stalwart of justice and truth, Miriam has always fought to ensure that these two virtues prevail in the Philippine political arena in every session she participates in. Since her entrance into the public sector, Miriam has displayed the traits of a true Filipino politician.

Throughout her entire career in both the private and public sectors, Miriam has encountered numerous adversaries who have attempted to undermine her integrity. There have been libelous statements made against her and even threats on her life, but these challenges have never deterred Miriam from continuously serving her fellow Filipinos. Her boldness and courage to stand up for what she believes is right have become an example not only for her fellow senators but also for every Filipino who desires to see their country prosper.

One of the factors that propelled Miriam to international prominence is her outspokenness. Her vibrant personality has empowered her to comment on issues that other politicians might ignore, fearing the influence of those who are corrupt. Throughout her time in the Philippine Senate, Miriam has become renowned for voicing her concerns about matters that she perceives as unjust or unlawful. In various hearings and proceedings, Miriam consistently raises issues that others might overlook, and her assertive demeanor enables her to contribute significant insights to the results of these hearings.

Compared to many of us, Miriam has undoubtedly confronted more challenges in her profession. She has faced considerable opposition in her political career, weathered personal storms, and endured losses that would seem insurmountable to most. Yet, what sets her apart is her unwavering resolve. Miriam remains resolute in her dedication to serving her people, even in the face of overwhelming obstacles.

Throughout her life and career in both the private and public sectors, Miriam embodies the ideal Filipino due to her unwavering drive for success. Her story serves as a great inspiration not only to Filipinos but to people around the world. Her perseverance, courage, and commitment to truth and justice are exemplary. Miriam's life teaches us that we can overcome any challenge, no matter how daunting, if we hold true to our convictions.
