The story resolve around Julien and Sophie who met each other when they were young. Their friendship revolves around with the game that they invented when they were young. It’s an odd game in which is all about extreme dares. In their game there’s a rule that they need to follow. That is if whoever is the one who’s holding the carousel box should do the dare without fail.
Let me talk about the things that I noticed in this movie. First is the movement of the jib crane which emphasizes the place which is a construction site. Then the jib crane movement change its focus into the carousel box that is lying there which the construction workers doing their jobs. At that time you can say that there is a sentimental value with that carousel box. The next scenes you will notice that the color grading that they used are warm color which sometimes looks colorful and expressive. The next scene is the fast forward editing I don’t know the term but you can see the bus driver is running to follow the moving bus. You can see that his shoes were left behind in his left side but he acted as if he leave his shoes it in his right side which is a mistake. Because in the next scene where they explains the happenings before, you can see that the shoes that I’m talking about was left behind at the right side of the bus driver not in his left side.
The animations are understandable because the movie was made around 2004. In the classroom scene you can notice that they are using slider glide camera while using close-up shots. Speaking of shots you can notice that whenever they trying to emphasize the carousel box they always using extreme close up shots.
Let me talk about the continuity in the film. One of the continuity that I noticed in the movie the scene where Julien went home the he saw his mom doing something then he hug her mom then they fell into the bed. I love the editing which makes the continuity perfect. And what I also noticed in the same scene is the messy place where symbolized the stress that Julien’s mother felt at that moment. But when Julien appear she acted like everything is okay. When they both fell in the bed you’ll see that there’s a pictures and letter lying down in the bed. Which maybe she’s looking at them reminiscing her things.
In the animation part where Julien and Sophie played as Adan and Eve, you will notice that there are many symbolisms that are used. In the scene where Julien plays in the checkered floor you can see the movement of the Jib crane. The crane moves from the low angle that focuses in Julien shoes then moves upward while focusing to Julien to make emphasize the movements that his making.
In the scene where they burying the mother of Julien, as for Sophie sings for Julien to make him happy not because she just want to play around. The jib crane moves from low angle right then moves to high angle left side to let the viewer know where she is standing at that moment. Also at that moment little did we know the song that Sophie is singing will have a sentimental value with them and throughout the movie.
They used slide glide camera for their young to adult transition. As they grow old the color grading still kept, a warm and vibrant color even though the story in the halfway becomes dark and grim.
As the game of truth or dare revolves in their lives it made them feel alive and also they did not notice that this tradition also starts to ruin their lives. The production team did a good job for the transformations of the characters appearance, especially in the scene where they separate and they lives on their own. It’s a same area scene but you can tell the time difference of the clips.
What amaze me the most is the scene where they went in the restaurant, it’s the scene where Julien proposed to Sophie. The close-up shots and the Bokeh makes it as if they are the only people there. Also the dialogues were good and the turn of the event where you’ll realized that Julien propose was fake and he did it for revenge also was good for me. Even at that point the carousel box was there.
In the wedding scene the slider glide camera movement in the aisle is not that smooth as it should be. In the scene where Sophie was standing in the rails you will noticed that the camera shot was slightly tilt while Julien is slightly blurred and the focus was into Sophie. I think they purposely did it to emphasize Julien feeling about the happenings. I love the transition of the editing where Sophie is almost hit by the train for me it is good. Then they did put a clip of the carousel box to emphasize that it’s there.
In the bed scene where Sophie is with his future husband, the camera movements were moving towards them while slightly tilting until the shot become close-up shot to emphasize their moment. After ten years, you can see that Julien already have his children. The camera movement was moving together with the movement of the children and there was no cut in this scene it was a continuation shot until Julien ride on his car. After riding his car there are clips that shown while Julien making a summarization to what happened to his life. There are symbolism clips and some are literal clips to what he is saying.
In the cemetery scene where he is imagine he is seeing his mom, they animated that his mom is flying also as Julien was scene laying down in the gravestone you will notice an shadow in his body as if it is the shadow of his mom. As his mom flies away the next scene you will notice that the camera movement where also moving away to Julien. Not only the camera movement changes but also the color grading also changed. As the camera moving away to Julien the color grading was also changing. From warmth color it changed into cool color grading.
The scene where he met his clients and the material that he was showing of was blew away by a wind you can interpret it as how his life was miserable for him even though he have it all. Then in the next scenes you will notice that Julien and Sophie can’t move on as if they were chained with each other.
The scene were Sofie and Julien finally met again you can see that they focuses on the close-up shots that is slightly tilt to emphasize the craziness situation that the two were in. Also the movement of the hands of the clock makes it more intense. The situation becomes more intense when they edited the car chasing scene with the transition of the game play of Sofie’s husband together. In the raining scene as Julien fell in the ground the carousel box also fell into the ground together with him and then followed by the insane and unpredictable last scene.
For my conclusion or should I say what the movie made me realized is be honest. Even though you’re together with you love ones every day, you still need to be show and tell your real feelings to them. The miscommunication and misunderstanding is just like an air flying around us. They are there that may destroy our relationship with anyone. There is nothing bad to being honest with your feelings especially if it’s about love. I don’t want to be like them just because of misunderstanding they started to fight for unclear reasons which is clear that the reason where the fight start is because that they’re in love with each other. They are so in love with each other, without noticing that they become obsess with the game. They know that the carousel box and the game is the last connection that they had so they won’t let it go. And this game ruins their both lives.
