In a Summer School, I was asked to write about my hero. As I didn’t have a hero to write about, I did some research about computer science and stumbled across Marvin Minsky. He answered the question: “Will robots inherit the earth?” his reply was “Yes, but they will be our children”. This quote interested me which caused me to look into this work of Minsky’s arm since I was interested in robotics. Then I came across his work on AI, which involved him trying to uncover human thinking processes and replicate them in machines.
As a result, it caused me to want to write about him as my hero. I was very interested in robotics but looking at AI, I found myself wanting to develop software rather than hardware. I become more of an independent learner since coming to college and I feel like thrive more in college than in school since achieving an A in A-level Maths in a year. I have enjoyed the meeting new people and freedom in college. I am currently doing Further Maths. Enjoy the challenge of solving the algebra. I do physics a levelI attend coding skills class to improve and increase my coding skills. I also attended (SUMP) Solving Unusual Maths Problems courses at Swansea University to improve my maths skills. Doing SUMP has taught a different thinking process when solving equations. Making me realizing you want an equation to solve a set of type of question multiple times, not just solving one but multiple. I applied to my coding, as I don't want I can use once. I want a code that is reusable. I did computer science as a level, which helped me develop the love for this subject. As I didn't really do any coding before year 12. And as I started learning to code, I enjoyed coding enable to put others codes together to make a different program and be creatively free to code whatever you like to do.
Of course there the program crash, slowly finding and fixings these mistakes, I have learned how to avoid these mistakes and how to fix them if they occur. I took part in the ‘Brilliant club’ where I learned about cancer research and what hope to achieve. My final task was to write an essay that was marked at a university level, through this program I was able to build a firm foundation of academic writing, referencing and researching. I spent weeks 6 of my summer with ‘Aberystwyth Summer School’ studying Math, Physics, Computer Science. I enjoyed lectures and the student lifestyle. I was able to develop my referencing and writing skills to improve my academic writing at the Summer School. I was a senior leader in my secondary school and currently a student ambassador for my college. Representing my school or college has to give me an opportunity to practice my interaction with new people, thus helping to develop my communication skills. I was sponsored to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Where I worked with other people to help improve my leadership, communication and teamwork skills. One of the hobbies is chess. I enjoyed how creative and fatal a move in chess, and mistaking one mistake can lead to your downfall. Sometimes I even review my moves in a chess engine to see what move a missed, to help me make the right next time.
This got me interested in chess engine like AphlaZero, how dominate chess and other games like go and shogi. Got me interested in software engineering, wanting to develop software that advanced and can be used in different fields. I play rugby for my club and college. Playing rugby has to help me build my resilience and to persevere when it gets tough. I also play basketball in college. Playing these sports has to help me improve my teamwork and being to adapt to different playing style. Thus improving my decision making and being analytical of what move I make. AI is truly forefront modern science and I am excited and inspired by the challenge offered by the study of AI at a degree level.
