Following the appalling bursting of the bubble in 1992, Japan’s lost decade severely affected the Japanese residents who worked for better economy and wealth. My grandfather lost most of his financial institutional aids in business, my uncle’s loan for his house bursted, and my university graduate parents found difficulty in getting a job. As a Japanese teenager, having heard about these impacts from my families engined my curiosity towards real world causes and consequences of such economic events. I was also eager to know theories of economic events in order to compare and evaluate with other global financial crisis of different time. Evaluating this crisis as the main cause of current extended deflation and pessimistic economy in Japan, I chose to research whether or not the Tokyo Olympic games in 2020 will positively influence Japan’s GDP as my EPQ. Studying A Level Geography has further enabled me to link globalisation which increases tourism and faster information flow with profiting Japanese industries and how the multiplier effect can spark the economy. By applying knowledge from A Level Mathematics, statistical analysis of market failure and cost curve graphs came more naturally to me than others in my economics class. The satisfaction I get after filtering in economic concepts and theories is why I enjoy continuously investigating these subjects.

I want to investigate and explore the subject of economics during my times at university, making it link to my everyday life. Not only the theories but as I started to understand more about relatable economics, my interest also grew towards business strategies that vary between countries. Back in Japan this summer, I realised that Japan is one of the most competitive market full of choice including limited edition goods or products offering discounts on leisure activities. As well as these, it fascinates me to look into divergence of markets and consumer behaviour around the world. I further find contentment in understanding economic news and joining business conversation at family dinners. My global awareness has built up through communicating everyday with my international friends including Spanish, Australian and Indian. Studying Chinese culture and their communist society in my A Level Mandarin as well as communicating with local residents in Bangkok has also allowed me to be internationally minded. I believe that speaking and knowing the culture of the world’s most spoken languages including English, Mandarin and Japanese will broaden my business opportunities at work by communicating to more people that cannot be covered through translators.

In school, as a member of the Prefect, eco team, community action team and as a Deputy Head Girl I resolved what had previously been my biggest weakness - confidence. As well as being able to speak in public and in discussions, organising events and meetings as a leader has developed my resilience and evaluating skills for making the right decisions. Receiving the Bangkok Prep Spirit award and attitude award proves my commitment for every given task or voluntary work. Last Christmas, I successfully managed a secret santa for the sixth form and a candy cane event for the whole secondary school where I generated 6500B profits for future charity events. My communication skills and competitive ambitions also grew through football tournaments, athletics and 13 years of classical ballet out of school. Active involvement in teaching maths for asylum seekers from Bangladesh and being a translator for Japanese students in school has also developed my awareness for communities needing help. In order to gain sense of real life business economics, I worked as an internship at MedConsult international clinic in central Bangkok. From these two weeks, I have learned to think logically and to make responsible decisions as a marketing manager and an appointment confirmer.

Encountering social media marketing strategies and managing priorities was what I enjoyed and felt gainful. Participating in a university summer programme has also widen my range of business knowledge, such as being introduced to accounting and application of deep learning. As well as being the first recipient of Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award at Bangkok Prep, interacting with diverged business subjects has made me realise that my biggest enthusiasm and interest was economics and international business. In order to respond and adapt quickly to the changing demands of our globalised multicultural world, I want to utilise my enriched knowledge of economics after graduating from your university. This is not only done through specifying in my major, but also studying other specialised courses as well as broadening my social connection with different people I meet. Because Hong Kong is well known as the World’s leading international financial centre, I believe the environment is ideal for me to study well and to experience as an internship of different businesses.

Growing up as the eldest sibling doing housework and being the homework reminder for teachers and classmates, I have a strong sense of responsibility and time management. Participating in FOBISIA international leadership conference for leaders from each school, I was able to investigate different leadership visions and potentials. Furthermore, working and running charity events for communities such as Saeng Sawang and New hope schools has taught me the significance for providing help and favour.

So if I am accepted, I want to take advantages of my experience to conduct community service or spread my culture as well as being dedicated to my academic studies. Eventually, one of my target is to become economics analysts and a manager for guiding emerging businesses in developing countries of Asia into competitive global markets in an unbiased society. As a member of eco team of green flag awarded school, I am also considerate of the environment and biodiversity around the globe.
