Nursing has always been my passion ever since I can remember. The idea of helping people in their most vulnerable moments while providing expert medical care has always given me a sense of fulfillment. My journey to becoming a nurse has been a long and winding road that has been filled with challenges, yet at every juncture, I knew that it was worth it because of my love for this career.
Growing up as a child, I realized that I had an interest in the medical field. I was always fascinated by the human anatomy, how diseases could be treated and the procedures that were taken in ensuring that patient care was paramount. However, it wasn't until I had my first experience in a hospital as a teenager that I knew I wanted to pursue a career in nursing. Seeing the compassion, patience, and expertise that the nurses displayed towards their patients was inspiring. I knew that I wanted to be a part of the team that made a difference in people's lives.
It hasn't been an easy journey for me to get to where I am today. My first challenge was gaining admission into a reputable nursing school. The competition for spots was intense, and I had to bring my "A-game" to stand out. I had to take prerequisites, pass admission tests, and maintain good grades to get into the nursing program. Despite this being an arduous process, once I was admitted, I felt convinced that I had made the right choice.
At the nursing school, the curriculum was rigorous, and the workload was intense. Sometimes it felt like I was drowning in schoolwork and didn't have enough time to enjoy college life. There were many sleepless nights, endless clinical rotations, and multiple exams to study for, which could be exhausting. However, the rewards of mastering skills such as administering medications, taking vital signs, and changing dressings were satisfying. Also, making connections with other nursing students helped me relax.
Another significant challenge that I faced was during my clinical rotation in the emergency room during my third year. I had always been an empathic person; however, seeing patients come in with traumatic injuries, some of them fatal, was heartbreaking. I often found myself getting emotionally attached to the patients, which would drain me both physically and mentally. With time, I learned how to compartmentalize my feelings and focus on providing excellent patient care. This experience taught me that even though I had to be compassionate, I still had to be objective when dealing with patient cases.
As I near the end of my nursing school journey, I am beginning to contemplate my future in nursing. The world today is facing a healthcare crisis that has exposed the need for more healthcare providers that are equipped with the skills and knowledge to deal with the growing demand for quality healthcare. After graduation, I intend to work in a hospital setting where I hope to gain first-hand experience and hone my skills as a nurse. My dream is to specialize in oncology or pediatrics, as these areas align with my values for providing compassionate care to vulnerable populations.
One day, I plan to give back to my community by starting a non-profit organization that provides free healthcare services to underserved and disadvantaged communities. I believe that as a nurse, I have a calling to use my skills to help those who cannot afford healthcare.
In conclusion, my journey to becoming a nurse has been a fulfilling experience. Though it has been challenging, I have always found the strength to push forward and continue to pursue my dreams. I am grateful for the experience and have learned that perseverance and resilience are critical traits for any nursing student. As I strive to become the best nurse that I can be, I hope that my journey may inspire someone else to pursue the career of their dreams.
