We all are well-known with the fact that schools are synonymous to temples of knowledge. The quality, rigour and excellence of the teachers in these institutions have produced a multitude of proficient minds. The standard of teaching went hand in hand with the amount of knowledge that had to be delivered to students throughout their school life. But did we all turn a blind eye towards the current scenario of educational structure and curriculum of schools?
In the contemporary world, the schools’ objective is either to get more number of scholars getting admitted or have their eye only on the learners’ marks. They also feel that long learning hours will be helpful to the students. Looking from the side, much attention has been paid towards educational rights of the women, the poor, the disadvantaged section of the society, etc. but are they being welcomed to school for learning or to be a part of this academic rat race?
Besides, health was never a concern. Even if it were, only physical health was kept in mind (partly), and no attention was paid to mental and emotional health. Tough competition, academic stress, peer pressure, insecurity of future, and expectations have led to chronic depression as well as anxiety among students.
The need of the hour is to become cognizant of the potential changes In the current education system and teaching establishments. If I could redesign a school of my own, I would reduce the curriculum so that more attention is paid on in depth studying of limited topics. As covid-19 has turned us relatively tech savvy, we can take advantage of learning online at home so that students can have a better understanding through means of personalization, if in case they’re lagging behind. When children from disadvantaged sections of society join, I will make sure that they also acquire knowledge. Each one is important. Those who’re not academically strong shouldn’t be demoralised. My model of ideal school would let them excel in their areas of interest. We can’t afford to just keep on churning the scholars into this rat race, and constantly pushing them towards maintaining a position/ rank. One shouldn’t forget that we learn everyday to become better, and so, focus should be shifted from rote learning to active and meaningful learning in every phase of schooling.
Another very important aspect is health, as discussed before. We all struggle with different problems in our lives, be it social, mental, physical or emotional. All educational institutions should stay conscious about whether a child is suffering from any of these, and provide them with immediate assistance.
Not to lose sight, academics are not all that a schools’ objective should be. Personality/character development, that is, evolving of the humans’ behaviour, thoughts and feelings, must be paid heed to. I’ll make certain that morals and ethics are imbibed in the youth, because they can’t be separated from whatever one does in life. In all spheres, each and every work and action should be well coordinated with these values. Therefore, it becomes imperative for a school to not neglect it.
In my opinion, a child should be addressed properly as their holistic development is of utmost importance. If schools meet this target, a child is capable of turning into epitome of happiness and success, because ultimately, schools are foundation of a child’s future.
