Almost everyone has a hero or someone they look up to, some are actors or athletes, but my hero is my Mom. My mom and I have always been very similar so it was never hard for me to see her do something and know I could do it too. She is a very caring and understanding person as well which has just made our bond stronger because I know I can talk to her about anything. My family has been through some hard times and now that I’m older I can look back and truly appreciate my Mom for doing what she could to give me and my brother a good life. Most people wouldn’t see their parents as heroes, but my Mom has done so much for me that it just makes sense that she is who I look up to. She is my hero.
Throughout my life my brother and I have both made friends that didn’t have the best home life and would come over a lot. My mom rarely said no to them coming over and took care of them when they were at our house. She was their second mom and this made me really appreciate how much of a caring person she is. My mom is also the most understanding and accepting person I know. In middle school I realized that I’m Pansexual and I was scared of telling my mom because of my anxiety. She found out halfway through 7th grade that I was dating a girl and I had to come out. Since then she has been my number one supporter and even took me to my first Pride festival last October. She has also always been understanding of my depression, anxiety, and migraines. She has experienced all three so it’s easier for her to know how I’m feeling and help me when I need it.
A couple years ago my mom lost her job due to migraines so for we were living off savings and child support while my mom fought to get disability. She always made sure we had food in the house and did anything she could for me and my brother. Last year she won the very long fight for disability and now we are in a more comfortable lifestyle. I didn’t understand our financial situation back then because I was too young but now I can truly appreciate all the work she did to get to where we are now. My mom is also good with a sewing machine and even made me clothes when I was a baby. During the past year she has used her sewing skills and determination to make mask. It started with making them for close family but as she posted them on her Facebook more people wanted one. Her biggest order was 300 mask for my Aunt’s bank employees. It was a lot of work to make 300 mask but with the help of me and my grandmother she got it done in just 2 weeks. This showed me that when she puts her mind to it she can accomplish anything, and if she can do it so can I.
I have a great Mother and if anyone deserves to be called a hero, it’s her. She has shaped who I am and has taught me the most important things in life. She has showed me how to care for someone unconditionally, how to accept people as they are, and most importantly how to not give up hope. She will be my hero for the rest of my life and I hope that I can be as inspiring as she is one day.
