Bangladesh is transitioning into a modern economy with contribution of Agricultural sector towards overall GDP falling from 32% in the year 1996 to 18% in the year 2013 (World Bank, 2015). The country has undergone structural change since 1971, gradually moving away from agriculture-based nation to an industry and service-based nation. In the FY2013, share of agriculture in the overall GDP was only 18%, compared to 29% for industry and 54% in services sector. This shows that, with the introduction of globalization, reduction of trade barriers and advancement of technology, Bangladesh has opted for automation and technological utilization in order to reach the milestone of becoming an Upper Middle-Income nation. E-commerce in this country has significantly bloomed in the past 5 years or so, having notable impact on people’s lifestyle. With the introduction of app-based systems through entrance of Multinational Giants like Uber and Alibaba, usage of all forms of online delivery services, online shopping, ride-sharing platforms etc. are becoming more prevalent in the major cities of the country, with the prospect of more growth in the future. Moreover, local startups like ‘Pathao’, an app-based ride sharing platform obtaining seed-funding from international conglomerates through DFIs and many others on the same track clearly reflects upon the countless opportunities of the international expansion in this sector. Through this, it is quite inevitable that the demand of Web and App developers is going to increase with time in this country in order to take care of technical aspects and even give birth to new startups, in the form of consumer-friendly applications, which has encouraged me to pursue higher education in Computer Science so that I can learn something new and implement them in my nation’s welfare once I return to my country.
The reason I opted to study in Germany is because it is one of Europe’s largest economies as well as the most populous country, which somewhat resembles to the population density scenario in Bangladesh. Despite being such densely populated, the nation has been able to ensure the basic amenities for its residents and also cemented their position among the top grossing nations. My area of interest, E-commerce, has had a substantial growth in Germany as the sector itself rose to a market size of around 59 billion euros at the end of 2017, with around 11 percent growth. This will help me to garner valuable knowledge about the sector through practical experience, and will also help me to examine closely about the sector’s contribution towards German economy, and then implement them once I return to my country. For example, as of now in Germany, according to Ecommerce News (2018), “every eighth of a euro” spent in trade sector comes from e-commerce sales.
Moreover, Germany has achieved excellence in research and teaching through ensuring both competition and quality at the same time, which is evident in the form of booming rankings in recent years. It is also ranked the third best nation across the globe, according to US News (2018), showing it is relatively safer and a favorable country to study in, since the economic and political condition is stable, which means the country has a better environment for learning, studying and living peacefully.
