Pharmacists are a crucial aspect of society as they are actively involved with patients and are easily accessible by the community. Pharmacists are those who have comprehensive knowledge about medicine and are trained to accustom and benefit an individual’s needs. They have the responsibility of ensuring patients receive the correct amount of dosage of their medication but most importantly the correct medication.
I have always had a great passion in Pharmacy as it combines chemistry, which has always been a subject of personal interest, as well as being involved with the public. Previous work experience and extracurricular activities have prepared me to be able to continue studying in this field. Doing work experience in a local pharmacy has taught me how to prepare dosettes, take responsibility of deliveries and array prescriptions allowing me to gain an insight in the world of pharmacy which will justify valuable in the future. Also, two weeks working in the pharmacy has allowed me to learn business skills particularly with deliveries as I was responsible for controlling the stock of the pharmacy.
Another skill that i learnt was paying attention to detail because it is important to give patients the correct amount of dosage they require. I thoroughly enjoyed all departments I worked with as they offered me something diverse and increased my knowledge and understanding of pharmacy.
During my summer break, I attended NCS (National Citizen Service) program which improved my confidence, meet and interact with new people as well as excel beyond my comfort zone by completing multiple outdoor activities such as canoeing, zip wire, rock climbing and hiking whilst working as a team. Additionally, I had the chance to experience life as a university student and work with a charity organization campaign to raise awareness around Bradford City Centre about homelessness and hidden poverty.
The interaction with the local people of Bradford helped me utilize my social skills which are also vital when working with patients in the pharmacy. Whilst working with the organization, I set up a toiletry drive at the Asda in Keighley enhancing my ability to work as a team and leading group projects, again, a crucial skill to have whilst working with colleagues in the pharmacy. Furthermore, I travelled to a school in Poland to meet students from different countries across the world to gain an understanding about different teaching and learning styles. This enabled me to communicate with new people from different cultures. The language barrier made it difficult to engage with people at first; however, my determination and motivation assisted me greatly to overcome this.
I am convinced that these skills will help me succeed in a pharmaceutical environment because we live in a multicultural society with people coming from many different backgrounds that would need assistance with medication. I come from a diverse background having a mixture of white, Indian, Caribbean and Moroccan family members. This makes me an open- minded person comfortable with adapting to new situations or personalities that I socialize with. I enjoy helping my father with his business, at the weekend, where I am able to interact with others and use my organizational skills to help him run his company. I am a reliable, determined and enthusiastic person who will relish the opportunity to study pharmacy if I am given the opportunity.
