'The meaning of numbers in our lives' is Earl Kay Stice's speech, expressing the benefit of numbers in our daily existence. In modern society, accounting and finance have had universal effects, dominated by banks and financing all over the world. It makes up every aspect of humanity, helping to solve simple and complex problems. For this reason, I aspire to be part of such a fundamental career, hoping to use my skills to become a successful candidate.
Maths at A-level solidified my interest to study in finance/business. As my strongest subject, it benefits me as I am able to utilise my knowledge in analytical skills, applying it to varying aspects of my life. Alongside Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology support my progression, as the use of math in these subjects are key, proving my ability to apply content such as algebra, exponentials, graphs and the capability to convert units of measurements. Simultaneously, providing me with a better foundation of application, using my understanding to draw in information and apply it to reality.
George S. Clason's book 'The richest man in Babylon', illustrated the significance of money and expenditure, drawn particularly towards the '5 laws of gold'. He listed proper ways to manage personal finances, offering financial advice which is still used till this day. Moreover, I took the initiative to Undertake numerous MOOC courses in my spare time, including classes for accounting and finance and maths essentials that go over topics necessary for my chosen course.
Volunteering at a charity shop provided greater insight into the economy. Through my responsible position, I gained commercial awareness by witnessing successful circulation of money, business and management. Taking part the role of a cashier, pushed me to use my numerical skills under pressure, providing correct change to customers. This encounter enabled me to gain real-life experience on the concept of cash flow. Concurrently, I gained critical social and communication skills by chatting with customers and staff, learning the importance of teamwork to create a positive working environment. Managing my time efficiently was displayed through volunteering and work, as I balanced out my education and work-life equally.
My bilingual ability is an advantage, as banks are international organisations, in which effective communication with clients from other regions is required. I participated in a language club, where I took part as an essential role of a teacher, educating about the world of Nepali language and culture.
DofE and NCS encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, to commit and encounter new challenges. As a team, we completed tasks requiring crucial problem-solving skills obtained from our logical mindset. This established an appropriate decision-making regulation during DofE, that in hindsight assisted us with a positive attitude to find our way back to camp. As a red belt in taekwondo, I hold huge responsibility of leadership. Ensuring that juniors are equipped and prepared to proceed on with lessons. Competing at multiple championships led me to be focused, confident and self-disciplined which are all vital components in order to win.
My appreciation for this course extends my curiosity to explore further into the world of accounting and finance. Where the importance of numbers is interpreted as the basis of life. I am convinced that my skills will navigate me to the substantial world of finance, allowing me to become a successful accounting and finance student.
