My decision to pursue a degree in dentistry stems from the major contribution that dentists make to our healthcare. Whilst oral health is often overlooked and neglected, the dental instruments and materials utilised in dental procedures can directly improve patients quality of life. It is the boundless creativity and practical skills involved in dentistry that continues to intrigue me. The continuous technological advancements within the field of dentistry, from electronic record-keeping and data analysis to new diagnostic tools, provides new exciting treatment options and the potential for more accurate diagnosis.
This along with my genuine drive and commitment to make a physical and psychological change in peoples lives made me pursue a profession in dentistry. Studying mathematics has enabled me to develop statistical skills that are essential for making precise measurements and calculations. Statistics has further strengthened my ability to analyse and interpret quantitative data, which has given me the skills to evaluate the reliability and usefulness of data to make appropriate decisions. Additionally, studying Biology has given me a deeper understanding of livings organisms. This subject allowed me to observe the immune system and the defence mechanisms that help to fight harmful pathogens. It further allowed me to understand the importance of dental care and how bacteria that builds up in the teeth can lead to infections.
Furthermore, Chemistry has exposed me to intense practical’s such as titrations which required a high degree of accuracy and precision to obtain reliable results. Also I was fascinated by the use of chlorine in the water supply and how chlorine disinfection properties have improved the life of many people around the world. In doing further research on water supply, I learnt the health benefits of fluoride in water as it reduces the possibly of cavities and tooth decay. Recently, I volunteered at a local mental health clinic where I engaged with patients in a creatives and effective manner. Also I have been involved in many charity and fundraising events at my school, and this required a considerable amount time management and organisation skills. To gain further experience I worked at Spec Saver, which involved administering calls and merchandising. This experience allowed me to develop communication skills through interacting with a wide range of customers.
During a recent trip to Somalia, I was given the opportunity to shadow at a local dental practice. I was able to see the extraordinary work that dentists do to diagnose and treat patients whilst also providing patients with advice on oral hygiene. This experience was extremely insightful as I was able to witness how significant dentists are in an underdeveloped and under-equipped health care system. This further made me want to commit and contribute towards regressive areas of the world as a dental surgeon. My participation in the school debating team has allowed me to discuss possible solutions for pressing political issues on the NHS and has given me the skills to form concise arguments. Beyond academia, I have a deep passion for my art work which requires a delicate steady hand and precision. The level of patience and focus I apply to my art work can be transferred into the field of dentistry as it will allow me to work under pressure; in a stressful and unforeseeable conditions. Dentistry is an ever expanding industry which offers me the opportunity to combine science and art, and will give me valuable skills for further study and a dental career.
