“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,” Ralph Waldo Emerson. In order to further education, one needs to be enthusiastic about their chosen track and willing to work for it, especially in a nurse practitioner program. Because I am pursuing a dual nurse practitioner degree in Nurse Midwifery and Women’s Health, I have to be unwavering and able to model excellence in everything I do, from academics to the clinical setting and thereafter.
I believe I am the best fit for this specific nursing specialty at Georgetown University because I align with the program and their values. I believe in caring for the whole person, not just the complaint of the client. I also have respect for everyone I encounter and encourage those to voice their opinions and different viewpoints to be able to provide the best evidence-based client care I can offer, and I strive for excellence in all I do, including client care and education.
My pursuit of an MS in Nursing and my future career plans align with Georgetown in the way that my future career plans require an advanced degree and determination. My goal is to become both a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Nurse Midwife to be able to take care of women of all ages, from puberty through menopause and thereafter. This aligns with Georgetown because I believe I will be practicing the mission statement, “Advancing the health and well-being of individuals and communities,” not only while attending Georgetown but afterwards, once I am practicing as a WHNP/CNM. I will be able to enhance women’s health and the well-being of each of my patients and their families and communities by providing the best care I possibly can.
My advanced practice degree will help me meet my career goals, not only from what I have previously stated, but also by allowing me the familiarity of working hard for what I desire. Completing an advanced practice degree will also offer me the ability to challenge my intellectual ability and will allow me to ultimately practice autonomously, providing endless opportunities.
Being able to differentiate the diverse needs of women and their newborns will make me a successful practitioner in this role. A practitioner also needs to be able to communicate effectively, not only with their client, but with the client’s family and other health care team members, regardless of the education level or background. They need to be compassionate and obtain leadership skills as well as self-confidence. I see myself in relation to these skills, qualities, and experiences because I consider myself to be a leader and acquire self-confidence in everything I do. I have been able to effectively communicate with my clients and their families thus far in my undergraduate nursing career and only anticipate my communication skills to mature throughout graduate school and my career. Along with the reasons listed above, the aforementioned skills and goals make me a strong candidate for this program, and I hope to further my education at Georgetown University.
