Everyone has a place in this world where they feel secure, happy, and at peace. A place that holds or has held magic for them, where all the hardships and challenges seem to fade away and one can just relax and forget about all the negative energy in this world. My grandparents' house was that place for me, and it was not just the physical surroundings that made it special but also my relationship with my grandparents. I used to spend most of my summer there when I was a child and still go back to that place every chance I get. Everything about that place was extraordinary for me.
My grandparents lived in that house for over five decades. The house has been a sanctuary for them for decades that brought many joyous memories over the years. This event was their first owned home, they bought their first car while living in this house and it was also the place where my father, aunts, and uncles grew up in. The house is a country styled, two-story house with beautiful gardens and lakes surrounding it. It has large windows overlooking the gardens and lakes from every room and a big rooftop with a chimney on the top. My grandfather would always light the fireplace in winter, so there was always a thin trail of smoke coming from the chimney. I liked being there in the winter, watching the snow falling down the trees, covering every layer of the lake and garden of my grandparent’s house with white frost. It was a sight to see. Summer and springs were wonderful too.
There was a rave of colors surrounding the house with blossoming flowers and fruits everywhere. You could hear the chirping of birds, see the bee's nectar flowers and fruits, and feel the summer breeze all over your skin. I loved playing games and climbing trees to eat fresh fruits from the garden with my cousins. My grandparents expanded the house eventually so that all their kids and grandchildren can live together as one big, happy family during the breaks. They love having people around. It was a tradition for all of us to pack our bags and live together in this one house that created memories that will last a lifetime for me. The blue lakes and the luscious gardens served as playing grounds for me and my cousins. Blotches of beguiling colors decorated the gardens. We used to play numerous kinds of games, but our favorite passé game was ‘the Witch.’
As someone perpetrated for a haggard witch wrapped in a ragged cloak, the others tried to steal the ‘enchanting’ fruits from her, without becoming her prisoners. The ‘enchanting fruits’ comprised of succulent mangoes and acorn-shaped lychees that were not only sacrificed for our games but were also used to make scrumptious pickles that leave a sweet lingering taste to your tongue that only have you wanting for more. The pickles can be eaten with anything although it is best when eaten with my grandma’s ever famous biryani. This recipe is only known to my grandma, and no matter how many times my mother or aunts tried to replicate it, nothing could ever come close to beat its taste. As the aroma waft through the air making our mouth water, we all would scamper towards the table begging to have the first plate of biryani and stuffing our bellies till it became little mounds enabling us to move.
Looking back over the years, I have realized that the only place that holds a very special place in my heart is my grandparent's house. I have many wonderful memories associated with this place. No matter where I go or live, I always come back to this place. Every spot in this place was made with warmth, dedication and an abundance of love. This place holds a mystical atmosphere of a family house built by my grandparents. Their taste for details and their commitment to making this place so memorable is seen in everything we touch and see to this day. I always feel secure and relaxed here. It has this unique power of clearing up all my worries and problems and replacing it with being felt loved and cared for. I hope that someday in the future, I can build a house of my own where my children and grandchildren can make their own, unique memories and it becomes a safe haven for them as this place was for me.
