National Honors Society is the top honor of excellence of East Chicago CentralHigh School. I am a dedicated, assiduous student, that with the assistance of the NHScan benefit my academic and personal life. I always try my best academically and I amalways trying my best in being a great role model. I personally believe that I would be avaluable member to the NHS because I feel that I can change many lives for the betterin my future. Being in the NHS, I as a member of my community, can open moreopportunities for my life. However, for me to be able to do this, I would have to followthe four cornerstone of the NHS.I personally enjoy school because it is an institute where I can challenge myselfto learn new things. This is precisely what the first cornerstone, Scholarship, tries tosay. To me, scholarship is to feel the need to not just succeed, but to go far beyondsuccess and surpass your mental limit. I have already began to incorporate scholarshipin my academic life by joining Calculus club in order to be prepared for the AP Calculusexam in my senior year of high school. In my personal life, I will strive to always pushmyself mentally by doing extra work and by moving ahead in order to be prepared tosurpass my potential the next day.Leadership is something that isn’t new to me. I have been told and I know that Ihave many leader qualities. To me, a leader is someone who has the drive to put othersfirst before himself/herself. A great leader must show confidence, intelligence, and havethe thought process to make decisions that will affect a group and not just themselves. While I enjoy taking charge at times, I try my hardest to listen to other student ideas andgive my honest opinion.

To me, Service is the will to guide others in need without reward, such asvolunteer work or community service. While I may not do much in my community, I dostay and assist my grandmother who has fallen ill with cancer while my grandfather isworking during my free time at home. I honestly love to help people in need, but I feelthat I never have the time to. This year I will change that by planning to speak to mycounselor to see what other volunteer work I can do in school and around mycommunity. I feel that providing service to the community or a family member is a greatway to build character. The most difficult cornerstone to explain is the final cornerstone, Character.Everyone is different in their own ways, but a person described to have good characteris a person who always tries to make good decisions throughout their life. Somequalities that can be associated with good character are respect, responsibility, honesty, creativity, intuition, and many more that apply. A person should try to apply thesequalities in all of their actions. I am not perfect, but it only means that I need to tryharder. I can’t promise that I will not make mistakes. Nonetheless, I will learn from anyof my mistakes and use them to put me right back on my path to a successful future. Finally, while I know there will be some rough times ahead, I will persevere andgo past the expectation of my peers and teachers. I am now a candidate to join theNHS, to be honest, I couldn’t ask for anything more. I hope to join this organization ofsuccess and be at the pinnacle of success like all of those before me. Thank you forconsidering me as a candidate for this opportunity.

Expert Review
The essay presents a compelling case for the author's candidacy to the National Honors Society (NHS), highlighting dedication, leadership, and service. The structure is well-organized around the NHS's four cornerstones: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. The author articulates their personal connection to these values through concrete examples such as participating in academic clubs and supporting family members. However, the essay could benefit from more specific details about past leadership experiences and volunteer activities to strengthen claims of leadership and service. Additionally, while the narrative is heartfelt, there are minor grammatical errors that detract from its overall polish. The use of sources is formal but feels somewhat disconnected from the main narrative; integrating these references more naturally could enhance credibility. Overall, this essay demonstrates strong potential with room for improvement in specificity and coherence to elevate its impact on readers.

What can be improved
The essay effectively outlines the author's commitment to the National Honors Society's core values: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. However, there are several areas where improvements could enhance its overall quality. First, providing more specific examples of past leadership experiences would strengthen the claims made regarding the author's leadership qualities. For instance, detailing a particular project or initiative they led would offer concrete evidence of their ability to motivate and inspire others. Similarly, elaborating on community service activities beyond assisting family members could present a broader view of their commitment to service. Additionally, while the narrative is sincere and engaging, addressing minor grammatical errors would improve clarity and professionalism. Attention to sentence structure and punctuation will contribute to a smoother reading experience. Lastly, although references are included for credibility, they feel somewhat detached from the essay's main narrative. Integrating these sources more fluidly into the text could provide additional context for the author's points and further substantiate their claims about leadership and scholarship. By enhancing specificity in examples, polishing grammatical issues, and improving integration of references, this essay could significantly elevate its impact on readers and make a stronger case for the author’s candidacy in the NHS.
