Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved taking care of people. Whenever one of my family members was sick or injured, I remember dropping anything I was doing at that moment just to try to help the people I cared about. Then one day, my dad was home from work with the flu and I was sitting on the couch beside him, holding an iced pack on his head and he told me I would be an amazing nurse someday. At the time, I barely even knew what a nurse was. I still asked him why he thought that way. He proceeded to tell me that nurses love to care for people and make them feel better. After hearing that, I was sold. Ever since that day sitting on that couch with my dad, I have known that I wanted to be a nurse. Being in my first year of the nursing program, I’m finally on my journey to my dream profession that I have so much passion and desire to learn more about. I’m writing this Manifesto to remind myself how I view nursing as a profession, my core values of compassion, balance, and purpose, and my vision throughout my professional program to be open-minded and integrate integrity and perseverance.
I view nursing as a very respected and admired profession. When I think of a nurse, I immediately think of the word caring. A study was conducted to determine which core values nursing students seemed the most important. The “caring” factor seemed to be the highest, which shows values of altruism and justice. This shows how nursing students believe in selflessness and the well-being of other people. I also value and respect the ability of nurses to show empathy and compassion during extremely vulnerable and grievous situations with patients and their families. Empathy can be defined as the basis of a therapeutic relationship, by understanding others’ emotions, and being able to understand what people are going through, on top of their own emotions. I also believe that nurses have the ability to form trust between them and the patient. This is a skill that makes nursing such an admired profession. When patients feel like they trust their nurse, they feel able to open up and feel like they are heard and being cared for.
As a first-year nursing student in a professional program, I have faced many challenges and conflicts which have made me who I am today. My values that I have cultured are compassion, balance, and purpose. Compassion and feeling sympathy for people is something I’ve always felt. Balance is a crucial value in my life. It reminds me that in order to do everything I love, I must sacrifice things at times, in order to get a healthy balanced lifestyle. For example, when I’m studying all day on a Saturday, I can allow myself the evening off to relax and reset my brain, so I stay mentally healthy. The purpose is the feeling of being accomplished and having an impact. I live my life knowing that I’m doing something that makes a difference to at least someone in the world. In my first year, I’m bringing a positive attitude and a willingness to learn into the program. I want to get the most out of my nursing experience, so I bring a non-judgemental, open-minded attitude. This will allow me to not only make new friends to, but it will allow me to learn and grow into the best nurse I can be. Once I have completed the program and it’s time to begin my profession, I would like to take everything I have learned throughout my education and be able to apply this in my patient interactions. My values and emotions are very important to me, so I will carry these with me to my profession in order to stay true to who I am as a person. However, I must be mindful of these values and emotions. Nurses are professionals who internalize their values by embracing them and are conscious of these emotions, so they are able to control them during nurse-patient relationships. This emphasized how important it is to be aware of who I am and what values shape my identity, so I can accept this and not force my values on my patients and coworkers as well as not be influenced by other people.
My vision as a student nurse is to be open to new experiences as well as to learn perseverance and integrity skills. Being open to new experiences is very important to me since it allows me to be faced with change and challenging experiences. I see myself meeting so many great people who will support me and make my nursing experience exciting and interactive. I also see myself getting involved with various nursing study groups and events. This will allow me to connect with people outside of studying purposes, which will improve my communication skills and my mental health. Being open will give me the qualities of being familiar with internal and external stimuli, this will allow me to be flexible and adaptable to a variety of situations. I intend to continue to uphold my values and beliefs throughout my program as well as though my nursing career. These values have made me who I am today and will help guide me through life. I intend to intergrade other values throughout my experience as well. The act of perseverance will help me throughout my nursing program and profession since it will help me stay true to my values when times are difficult or when I feel like I’m not able to achieve my goals. Integrity also will play a crucial role in my profession by staying true to my values and moral standards and being honest with myself. Being able to control my emotions by having qualities of perseverance and integrity will allow me to question myself and be able to cope with challenges that I face, rather than blaming others. Positive events in my life will reinforce my beliefs and my values whereas challenging times will make me question them, but that is when I must rely on my values the most.
My values and beliefs are very important to me and make me who I am. Throughout my program, I want to stay strong to my values of compassion, balance, and purpose because they will remind me of who I am and what I think is important. Gaining other values like perseverance and integrity will allow me to focus on what I believe is important. Nursing education was never intended to be easy. When it seems challenging, I am going to remind myself of this manifesto and why I want to be a nurse. My personal vision and beliefs will keep me on track and guide me to be the best compassionate, balanced, and purposeful nurse I can be.
