While assessing the leadership skills and methods in nursing, I was placed in a ward where the team leader was yelling at the nurses throughout the morning shift. The RNs were mainly graduates or with one or two years of experience while the team leader was a clinical nurse. There was poor communication, organization and proper coordination in the shift. There was a clear break-up between the team members and the leader which led to a poor level of care and prioritization of the patients by the caregiver. It was a pertinent model that led to increased workload and burnout of the nurses leading to poor healthcare. This paper uses a transactional leadership model in articulating the main issues present and methods that can be used to improve the level of care and engage the nurses in the hospital towards becoming more productive.
One of the challenges that faced the hospital was a poor leadership approach from the team leader. The leader did not engage the nurses amicably and allow them to function properly as a team through developing proper processes needed in the hospital accordingly. Insufficient skill mix was also one of the major problems that were being faced as the nurses caused many errors in their delivery of care. There was a major problem since the skill set of the nurses and experience was not enough to oversee proper care methods in the hospital. Insufficient staffing that led to overload and burnout for the nurses was also a major problem. These problems led to poor care for patients in the hospital. The patients were not given the best form of care and there were problems that could be underlined under the set systems and models that were being used in the ward.
The transactional leadership model is one of the most successful forms of leadership in nursing. Transactional leadership is aimed at inspiring the other team members towards becoming better and helping them towards achieving their potential (Matsuo, 2012). Transactional leadership is equivocal when dealing with a large number of people who have different qualities and work in a single environment thereby getting the best from each employee. One of the main strengths of transactional leadership is engaging and understanding the team members. The clinical nurse should engage with the RNs to understand their strengths and weaknesses and work out a proper model or approach towards augmenting the best methods of change (Grohar-Murray et al, 2016). The clinical nurse needs to communicate and strengthen the relationship among the workers to get a proper model of motivating the nurses for improved productivity and care.
Developing the skills of the nurses who do not have a high level of experience is also one of the attributes that the leader should look to improve. The nurses need to create an actionable model towards creating a strong approach of change under the set systems. The clinical nurse needs to engage with the RNs by conducting regular meetings and ensuring that the leader contributes towards better care (Finkelman, 2015). Leading by example in healthcare is essential while monitoring and advising on the best methods are also equally critical in nursing. The nurses need to be advised and taken through the different methods essential for giving individual better care models. It is these essential attributes that need to be critically engaged thereby outlining the main measures towards changing the level of skill set for the nurses.
A delegation of duties and giving the nurses a chance to decide on rotations that are used by the nurses is also a critical aspect in driving proper care in the ward. The RNs need to be given time and space to work out on proper working schedules and not be under close monitoring and control from the clinical nurse or their leader. Transactional leadership entails giving an opportunity to the team members to deliberate on the best methods that are developed towards improving the methods devised. It is imperative to create a proper working model in nursing that gives the team members a better platform towards changing the models developed. Transactional leadership aligns with trusting the team members and inspiring them to be better through the actions and methods instituted. Leaders have to understand and measure the strengths and weaknesses of their team members thereby widening the scope and methods that can be developed by each employee (Wess and Tappen, 2012). Motivation and proper communication are imperative in nursing care since the nurses have to communicate with the patients as well as team members. The communication methods used by the leader needs to instill confidence among the patients and create a proper model towards changing the systems created (Finkelman, 2015). The different communication models underlined needs to be critically articulated in the systems underlined. The leaders need to develop the best motivation processes thereby developing the best means towards changing the scope and level of care given.
The leadership practice would be essential in driving the level of care given to the patients since the workers would be motivated towards giving proper care. Patients would also gain from proper communication methods instituted and an improved form of care. The gap that exists between the leader and the team members would be effectively bridged thereby creating an actionable process that would be effectively underlined and accentuated under the set systems. The level of care given to patients is motivated by the specific processes that have been mapped thereby underlining the best means that are underlined under the specific tools instituted (Wong et al, 2013). The engagement process among the team members would create a good environment among the patients where the level of care would be effectively improved in the hospital. The meetings would also lead to more organization among the nurses. A regular meeting among the team members where the issues facing the nurses would be discussed is essential in developing the best methods and giving a chance to members to create a proactive model essential towards improving the level of care given in hospital.
In conclusion, in a hospital where the team members are not in tandem with the leader, transactional leadership is the best methods towards inspiring the members. The level of experience is also a critical aspect since transactional leadership ensures that proper models have been mapped thereby articulating and creating a better process of change in the hospital. Nursing care is a critical aspect of improving the level of healthcare given, therefore a leader needs to get the best from all the nurses to ensure that the proper form of care is given to patients. Transactional leadership is a good leadership model that gets the best from the team members thereby strengthening the leader over the long-run.
