In this OJT narrative report essay, I will share my experiences and learning during my On-the-Job Training (OJT) program.
This course, The Industrial Attachment, is an On-the-Job Training (OJT) program intended for students to apply the theories they learned from the university in practical industrial applications within a working environment.
The main aim of the On-the-Job Training (OJT) program is to provide students with suitable training related to their field of studies and future work. The training institution offers the required practical and hands-on experience through assignments and techniques performed within their organization, with the goal of enhancing the learning, skills, and character of the students.
The significance of the On-the-Job Training program is that, after graduating from college, it enables students to adapt to their workplaces easily, considering the practical and theoretical knowledge gained from the program. Additionally, essential skills such as communication and interpersonal abilities are likely to be improved, including the ability to work in a team. This helps students achieve optimal job performance, which may lead to further job opportunities at higher levels.
As a Mechatronics undergraduate student industrial trainee, my work included accompanying my practicum supervisors at all times in the company plants to observe their work practices. This was critical for learning how to perform specific tasks under their supervision.
These tasks include those related to mechanics, such as the inspection and replacement of filters, worn parts, and lubrication of the bending, cutting, and shearing machine parts. I also checked the parallelism of the Beam and Back Gauge on a regular basis.
When the worker started up the water jet and changed the pressure from high to low, the intensifier's hydraulic piston moved faster in one direction than the pump could handle. The immediate solution I offered was to switch off the cutting head and then switch on the pump to allow the pressure to build properly.
There was a safety hazard on one of the machines where the wires were exposed. I reported it to my supervisor and tasked one of the technicians with replacing the exposed wires and conducting a full inspection of the component.
During the training, I received an incredible practicum experience that has developed my technical and practical knowledge, as well as various qualities and beneficial skills that would significantly contribute to my success in Mechatronics Engineering.
In conclusion, my training has provided me with high-quality practicum experience that involved practical applications of the theories I learned from my Mechatronics Engineering program at AMA International University Bahrain (AMAIUB).
I have also learned valuable work skills such as teamwork and many others that will be beneficial for my future. I am very thankful to all the people who helped me throughout this experience.
During my practicum course, I was assigned to the Safety & Maintenance Department in ELABTAH COMPANY. The practicum supervisors emphasized the significance of safety and health. I learned about all the safety and health hazards, as well as the safety procedures and actions that should be taken in response to any safety issue. I also gained an in-depth comprehension of the different components of machines, which significantly enhanced my technical knowledge.
Additionally, I enhanced my communication and interpersonal skills by effectively communicating with supervisors and inferiors, learning how to work with different types of people, and collaborating in a team. My practicum experience provided me with skills that cannot be taught but must be experienced, and I learned that a person's attitude is one of the main factors that determine success in the working environment.
On the first day, I visited the factory at the industrial city in Dammam and met the supervisor. He introduced me to the company system, style, and staff members. We discussed the hazards, emergency procedures, and evacuation plans for safety emergencies. Later, I attended a seminar on leadership and teamwork. I received explanations about the significance of various machine parts and their uses. For instance, they explained the press brake's operation and components, as well as the working of the hydraulics system.
Throughout the training, I learned about valves such as pressure relief valves and directional valves and how to replace them if damaged. I also learned how to fix or replace the oil pump if necessary. They taught me about the water jet machine and its components, and we worked on replacing the oil pump and the cutting head to improve cutting accuracy. I reviewed what I learned with my supervisor and asked questions.
Later, I supervised the maintenance team while they repaired and fixed various equipment, including sensors, valves, oil pump, and cutting head. I received explanations about the shearing machine and its working principles. I learned how to control the power back gauge, operate the machine safely, and perform general maintenance tasks.
The work I performed for the Safety and Maintenance department contributed significantly to the department's overall goal in the organization, which is to provide a safe and well-maintained working environment and achieve production targets safely, utilizing the company's assets to their fullest potential.
