Ever since technology has become widespread people have been making more and more things digital. From books to shopping, almost anything a person can think of can be accessed electronically. However, that does not always mean it is a good thing. Just because I can eat thirty cookies doesn’t necessarily mean I should. The same thing can be said of the new fad, online classes. Many think it is a good idea to take online classes. After all, a person can take a class on their time going by their own pace. Unfortunately, people also fail to consider the disadvantages of taking an online class. Online learning is less effective than traditional classroom instruction because, students have trouble remembering assignments, students cannot interact with the teacher face to face, and students cannot always access the class.
When a student is in a classroom they can easily remember what is due. The teacher often times writes the assignment on the board and casually reminds them everyday up until the point of its turn in. Either way, the teacher is making sure you remember what’s due, and when it’s due. Online classes don’t do that. The teacher posts the assignment with the due date and the rest is up to you. In fact, if the student doesn’t log into to the class daily to check assignments they may not even realize that an assignment was posted. Once a student has established that something is due, it is up to them to remember that. If they forget then they forget.
Everyday a students get up to go to school they see their teachers face. They can talk to their teacher and ask any last minuet questions they had about the paper that’s due tomorrow. However, in an online class interaction with the teacher is quite challenging. Many students have no idea what their teacher looks like, and unless the teacher decides visit them they never will. This makes getting to know the teacher harder. The student doesn’t know what pushes the teacher buttons until they push it. The student also cannot ask questions and get a speedy reply. Unless the student is a master of the email, and sends a message just when the teacher happens to be checking their email, there is always a lapse of time before a reply.
Going to school is mandated by the U.S. Every Monday-Friday students wake up brush their teeth, get dressed, and go wait for that yellow school bus. It is not that hard to go to school unfortunately, it’s the opposite way for an online class. First off the student has to have a laptop. Then the student needs a stable internet connection. However, it is not as easy to get a stable internet connection as it seems. If there is a storm and the power is out you have no internet. However, internet or no internet, that research paper is still due tonight.
In conclusion online classes are less effective than regular in school classes because students have trouble remembering assignments, students cannot interact with the teacher face to face, and students cannot always access the class. Personally I take both online and regular classes and I find the regular ones more reliable. I have lost y internet connection a few times and had to submit stuff late. My laptop has automatically shut off and erased my stuff, and my laptop has crashes so I couldn’t post anything. Regular are more reliable then online classes.
