Though the gem is mostly known as the Tiffany Stone, it has other names. The accurate names for the gem are opal fluorite and opalized fluorite. These names can reasonably represent the Tiffany Stone. Another popular name is Bertrandite but, that name is incorrect because Bertrandite is a mineral, which only represent parts of the rock. It is also called ice cream stone because of its delightful color.

There are many stories behind the name Tiffany Stone. Some people attribute the name to Tiffany and Company, a famous luxury goods retailer. The company has never been associated with Tiffany stone. Others attribute the name to the daughter of a Brush Wellman employee who collected the colorful stones brought home by her father. This story could be possible, but the names of the miner or daughter were not found in any records.
