We all know those nerdy, computer guru types who have minimum social skills but are expert hackers and can spend hours alone cooped up in their caves. These are the type of people who may succeed at online classes. However, online education is not feasible for those students who need face-to-face guidance from a live professor, who are not computer experts, and who wants a credible degree that will enable them to obtain a good job. For myself, there are several benefits of being in a classroom with a teacher. The on-the-fly knowledge and notes they supply have been invaluable. In a classroom setting the student can ask any question they have and receive and answer right away. Also, the professor can get to know students and provide the specific support that that student may need.
My major in school in Software Development. I have, what I think, is an above average knowledge of computers but there is much I do not know. At a traditional school there are resources available for those that need it. Services such as computer labs, libraries, and tutoring are all part of gaining the knowledge you need. Students do not have to worry about having the newest, up to date hardware because it will be available to them through the school’s facilities. According to a 2013 Gallop pole, the majority of Americans still view the traditional diploma as superior to the online degree. Most people polled, 68 percent, rated 4-year schools as “excellent” or “good” while 64 percent rated community college as high as 4-year schools. Only 13 percent of those surveyed said that an online degree would be looked at positively by employers and a mere 11 percent felt that online school’s testing and grading could be trusted. Even though public’s perception of online degrees has changed, many employers still prefer a diploma from a traditional college. While traditional school is not for everyone it is what works best for me. The professors are available for face-to-face interactions and to answer a student’s questions. Those who do not have the technology to do online schooling have the resources available to them for use at the campus. The degree I will earn from going to a traditional school is still the preferred education to have in the workforce. There are many reasons why someone would choose traditional school over online school and these have been a few of mine.
