When the talk of helping those around you what type of emotions go through you? Do you feel guilty for when you didn’t help the little old lady grab a jug of milk at the top of the shelf, or are you proud of your many selfless acts that you are selfishly plagued with the thought that you are deserving of some sort of reward for your civil services? Either way whether you’re the one helping or getting helped, the thought may come to mind, “Why aren’t more people helping around?”
Altruism is the selfless concern for the well-being of other people around you, it’s the act of being kind and helping all in which you can. Although cynical people may be concerned about your true motives, you know that you’re just there to help (unless it’s money you want, then, in which you don’t deserve) it’s possible to be too kind for your own good, but that’s not what we're going to be talking about today. What we’re going to talk about today is, why possessing altruism is a good trait, and you should learn it for yourself and make it a staple of your life.
First, helping people directly will help make their life even the tiniest bit easier, of course depending on the task at hand. And while you help others your brain will release chemicals called dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin the hormonal chemicals help us humans in some ways. They all help in boosting our moods and lower the effect of cortisol, which is and isn’t good depending on the situation. Cortisol is good for helping regulate your body and its many functions, however having too much of this hormone can cause negative effects such as Anxiety and Depression, Trouble sleeping, Headaches, Heart disease, Memory problems, weight gain, and problems with depression. There have been studies to prove that people who have helped others have felt stronger and more energetic, a calmer feeling, and less depressed, while also increasing the feeling of self-worth.
Second, a study had found that people are more likely to go out and help others after observing others do such a kind act, this creates a form of a ripple effect in the area of which the good deed has taken place, thus encouraging others to help around. Being a helpful person will give you a good rep even if it’s to last for a limited amount of time, good deeds will always go rewarded, maybe not at the time of the generous act but possible later down in life.
In conclusion, being a good person in general will allow for better opportunities in life, for your reputation and some other factors may dictate on whether you deserve a good spot in life. For example, respect is a big thing when it comes down to working in a, let’s say, a white collar job. In this job having respect from your peers in the office and your boss may allow for a better spot in your company or even that raise you’ve been yearning for (this event is a hypothetical example so don’t take it to heart) But being a good person has many pros to it.
