Musculoskeletal elements that face the heat of aging the most are the joints. As a result of years of overuse, joints forming the knees, hips, and hands begin showing signs of inflammation that often indicates an onset of Osteoarthritis. While it is incurable, Osteoarthritis can be managed better by following a set of do’s and don’ts listed in the following article.

Living with Osteoarthritis without mastering the art of managing the symptoms to avoid an ocean of pain day in and day out can be a menacing prospect. A condition that is so common in the States that at least one in every four adults suffers from it, osteoarthritis is one of the leading reasons for disability in older adults. It starts with the decaying of the cartilage that encases the bones and serves as natural padding. This deterioration eventually leads to a situation where the bones forming the joints start rubbing against each other causing inflammation. Patients can reduce the frequency and intensity of flare-ups by practicing the following dos and don’ts:

  1. Do Oil Those Joints keeping the S.M.A.R.T Exercise Tips Handy. While exercising can help ease arthritis pain, it is vital to know how to go about it in an arthritis-friendly way to avoid worsening your condition. The S.M.A.R.T solution recommended by the CDC for this involves:
  • Start Slowly and At A Low Intensity
  • Modify Your Fitness Routine Regularly To Avoid Overexerting a Specific Joint
  • Activities that are Easy On The Joints like Yoga and Tai Chi Are Advisable
  • Recognize spots where you can safely exercise without the fear of falling and hurting yourself
  • Talk to your physician and a physiotherapist to seek guidance
  • Don’t Push Yourself To Exercise If You Are Suffering From A Flare-Up. When your arthritic joints are stiff and painful, rest up and allow them to bounce back before restarting your exercise routine.
  • Do Consider Acetaminophen To Combat Pain. Acetaminophen is a relatively safer choice when it comes to painkillers as it has fewer side effects. However, before you begin taking acetaminophen on a regular basis, do get a green signal from your doctor first.
  • Don’t Take Acetaminophen If You Have a Compromised Liver Or Kidneys. Acetaminophen, if consumed regularly and in high quantities, may have a damaging effect on the liver and kidneys especially if these organs are already weak due to pre-existing conditions.
  • Wear Protective Gear Like A Knee Brace. Knee braces can help support your knee joint and reduce the level of joint depreciation by providing adequate external padding. Aside from a knee pad, you can consider using supportive devices like a walker or a walking stick to make moving around easier.
  • Life as an arthritis patient doesn’t necessarily have to be gloomy, pain-riddled or confined. It can be full of positivity and joy provided you are mindful of the pointers given above.
