While they share some similar characteristics, understanding the differences between them is essential for addressing and eradicating racism in society. Overt racism is the most recognizable form of racism. It refers to discriminatory behavior that is intentionally and openly expressed. Cultivating empathy, understanding, and appreciation for diversity is essential to recognize that everyone is equal. Of course, there is no simple solution to combat these types of racism. However, starting small can lead to significant progress. For example, people should learn more about different cultures, speak out against microaggressions, and take an active stand against racism in their communities.
The understanding of the differences between overt and inferential racism is critical for addressing racial disparities in society. Although both forms of racism have different implications, they both can have significant negative impacts on marginalized communities and society as a whole. To combat racism, society has to acknowledge and address it, even when it is subtle.
