Imagine you are under the water. The unknown is in front of you - intriguing and attractive, very close under your feet. The moment you put your head under the water the transition between two worlds is instantaneous. Are you in a movie on shark week? No, you are just scuba diving and you are trying one of the best sensations in the world. As Robert Wyland, American artist known for his murals of sea life said: “The Ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination and brings eternal joy to the soul”. Today, I would like to share with you what scuba diving is, how it’s a discipline and not a sport, and the sensation you would get by doing it.
I started scuba diving when I was 14 years old, and I earn so far 4 difference licenses and I have more than 100 dives.
What is scuba diving? I will focus on the basic explanation of scuba diving and on its basic objects. Scuba diving is an activity that, unlike swimming and snorkeling, involves the complete immersion of the human body in a liquid environment. Now we will focus on the seven main instruments you need to scuba dive.
The first object is the breathing apparatus, which allows the diver to breathe underwater, increase the depth and stay underwater. The second object is the jacket buoyancy compensator also known as buoyancy control devices, BCD. The BCD is usually a back mounted or sleeveless jacket style device which includes an inflatable bladder used to adjust the buoyancy of the diver and provide positive buoyancy at the surface. The third object is the diving weighting system. It is another object that helps the buoyancy of the diver by counteracting the buoyancy of the diving suit and allowing the diver to descend. The fourth object is the suit to minimize the heat dispersion of the body immerged in water. There are various types designed for different needs. The fifth object is the swim fins, to help you move quickly, have efficient propulsion, or if you find yourself in the middle of a strong current or big wave. The sixth object is the dive computer. The use of it has become widespread as it accurately detects data such as depth, time, and your ascent rate.
The seventh and last object is the mask which covers only the eyes and nose. In fact as we have already said the diver breathes from the breathing apparatus. Let’s pause for a moment to summarize what we have found so far. We have seen an easy explanation of what scuba diving is and the main instruments you need to do it. Now you know the main point of scuba diving, let me tell you why it is a discipline. I will focus on the main reason. The head of the diver.
Scuba diving is not a sport, it’s a discipline. Personal athletic performance plays quite a role in becoming a good diver. The head is infinitely more important. Being underwater develops self-control and inner peace. Good divers are usually laid back, relaxed people who rarely lose their temper or control. So, if you find more taste in challenging yourself than challenging others… then diving is for you. My goal today, is to spread underwater activities to you, a discipline that can put us in touch with the wonders of the underwater world.
According to Umberto Pellizari, diver with several world records “From 0 to 100 meters and then even further down, precipitous in the abyss: the pulsations slow down, the body fades, every sensation floats inside new forms, only the soul remains. A long dip in the soul that seems to absorb the universe”. The physical sensation. You immerse yourselves in water, you are weightless, completely enveloped by this magic fluid. Under water you see, hear, breathe differently… It’s the fantastic world of silence. In today’s hectic life, doing a dive allows you to be alone with yourself, listening only to your breathing.
What's better than letting yourself be cradled, body and mind? Open your arms, close your eyes and listen. . . while your body "flies" into the void?
In the first dives there may be fear, the sense of the seemingly hostile environment, the lack of breathing; then the pleasure mixed with anxiety, that fight between a “seems beautiful” and “do not leave me alone”, and slowly magic pervades you. You will discover the “lack of gravity”, the possibility of playing like a fish and spinning like a baby in the womb.
Remember, the image of you under the water? Scuba diving is a strong sensation, it is the silent noise of thoughts while the soul enters synergy with the abysses, it is listening to the breath. And it is emotion and transgression at the same time.
I hope the information I provide today will help you to introduce yourself to scuba diving. By understanding the basics of scuba diving, by recognizing the basic equipment, by knowing why it is a discipline and not a sport, and the feeling it can give you. If my words have not bored you so far, but have ignited a bit of curiosity in you, look for an opportunity to experience the emotion and the feeling of diving, breathing and going underwater with the tanks it will be wonderful!
