Scholarship Sample: 10 Reasons Why I Deserve a Scholarship

I am writing this essay about why I deserve the scholarship. To start, Aristotle, the famous Greek philosopher once said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” And while I pride myself in my numerous academic and career achievements I believe I attained the level of success purely due to consistency in making the right choices. While I never define my obstacles as failures, I mark my success by my repeated perseverance through trials. I have faced several challenges over the years, from lack of funds to complete rejection for not being in the “right circle”; yet I kept earning high grades and graduating at the top of my class. I am worth this scholarship and here are my 10 reasons why I deserve a scholarship:

1. I have the experience and perseverance to achieve my goals, regardless of the obstacles that stand in front of me.
2. I don't define my obstacles as "failures" because I credit all my successes to my continued optimism and perseverance through life's challenges and storms.
3. I have faced several challenges over the years, from poverty to lack of access to infrastructure; but I continued to get exemplary grades, graduated at the top of my class, and made a scientific discovery.
4. I have the courage, perseverance, and determination to achieve my goals, no matter what obstacles I have to overcome.
5. Throughout my undergraduate studies, I was self-financed. My parents couldn't sponsor my university studies due to their meager income, but that didn't stop me from pursuing my goals. In the summer, I took high school students for private lessons from 8am to 10pm six days a week so that I would have enough money to pay for tuition. In addition, I sold shoe polish and helped sophomores

In secondary school, I developed an interest in the oil and gas industry after a school trip where we visited a land rig in one of the oil communities in the Niger Delta. I was amazed at how they drilled for oil hundreds of meters subsurface guided by limited data. I was even more fascinated when I read about offshore platforms where oil and gas were drilled for, produced and transported long distances by pipelines to refineries or transported by floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units. That day, a new desire and interest were born in me to join the world of engineering to research and deliver better exploration and exploitation methods.

I achieved this dream by studying geology with an ExxonMobil scholarship, then Oil and Gas engineering while majoring in drilling with an Elf scholarship. I have worked on several important projects in the UK and a few worthy of mentioning are the following:

1.  I worked on enhancing oil and gas recovery from BP’s Magnus field while at Halliburton with a focus on better understanding the geology,
2. Part of the team that developed and explored Valiant Petroleum’s Dons field. I worked on this project as a consultant from Schlumberger. This helped in delivering production towards 6,500-7,500 barrels of oil per day (bopd).
3. Maintaining and updating the reservoir model of Forties oilfield, the largest oil field in the North Sea owned by Apache.
4. Project managing the acquisition of seismic over Isabella oil Field in the North Sea using the Ocean Bottom Nodes (OBN) technology for the joint venture of Valiant Petroleum and ConocoPhillips.
5. I deserve this award because I am a trusted member of the UK engineering industry.

With my education and experience, I can help sustain the growth of the UK oil and Gas industry. The award is not just going to help me get my MBA but will be equipping me to make strategic business decisions such as working with budgets, financial forecasting, and to understand the full impact of the decisions, negotiate, persuade others and lead high-performance teams.
