Coming from a poor background I know very well how it feels going without a meal for days and denying myself of the social life of an average student so the little funds I had could pay for tuition.
The first obvious advantage of getting this award is, of course, financial. I will not be graduating with a massive student loan debt or hold back my education in an obvious attempt at controlling my costs. Because I will not have to pay this award back, I can keep my full attention on my career instead of focusing on how I will repay a loan. This allows me to go into the UK public service or other industries that don't pay high remunerations.
Receiving this award which partially pays for my MBA will lessen my risk of discontinuing my studies and not attaining the degree I desire. By reducing my financial worries, this award means ample time for studying and researching, which will lead to more desirable grades and knowledge retention which increases my chances of getting a distinction.
Receiving an award of this kind potentially makes me a more attractive job candidate. Employers that understand the competitiveness of scholarships will recognize it as an achievement. It also shows future employers my exceptional abilities. Competitive awards are achievements worth including on resumes and will make me stand out during recruitment searches, even helping me achieve the career I desire.
This award will make the desired difference in my MBA. It will help me structure my free time. I will be able to augment the MBA experience and give more time to service-learning, volunteering and skill acquisition.
With my years of experience, an MBA will equip me with broader business knowledge to make strategic business decisions such as working with budgets, financial forecasting, and to understand the full impact of the decisions, negotiate, persuade others and lead high-performance teams.
The biggest benefit of being an engineer with an MBA, serendipitously, is that it allows me to think like an engineer, speak the language of an MBA and finding a common ground where I can carve out some sort of niche for myself.
As engineers, we typically find success in more analytical roles where we put our strong quantitative skills to work. The reason for this is because engineers have strong analytical skills and are problem solvers; I can easily transition these skills to make a company’s supply chain more efficient and productive.
Finally, an MBA will help unlock my entrepreneurial spirit. As an engineer, I am a builder and problem solver and I have ideas for great products and businesses for the UK engineering industry but I don’t have the business acumen to make this happen. This is where the MBA will help jumpstart the process by giving me the confidence and knowledge of how to bring a product to market or start my own business.
