Personal Statement on a Future Career in Nursing

Throughout my career, I have witnessed many individuals that need caring for, and I do so barely knowing the individual, mainly because off the personal and professional satisfaction, and also because I love doing it. My family worked in the Health sector and would discuss stories with me, and it fascinated me, hearing about the moving and inspirational moments that happen daily, as well as the heart- rending experiences they dealt with. My desire to become a nurse was reinforced when I was younger and unwell. The nurses who looked after me, genuinely cared for me as well as helping me understand my illness that a child could comprehend. Their selfless dedication was my motivation to continue the path of becoming a nurse.

I have recently volunteered for an organisation that has helped concrete my desire to become a nurse. I complete check in calls to people who have been identified as vulnerable during this Covid19 pandemic. I have grown to really appreciate the patients I work with. The ability to comfort patients is one of the main reasons why I am choosing nursing as a career. In the past I have worked in a wide rage off health sectors, therefore I am aware of challenges and specific task that can arise with different types of nursing. 

I have also had the opportunity to observe different clinical skills – such as medical terminology, minor medical procedures, and an understanding of clinical observation. I am currently completing an Access to Nursing course, which entails a large amount of Biology. This course will enable me to have a wider understanding of biology which will hopefully enable me to understand the biological concept behind many illnesses that nurse deal with daily. I also support the National Autistic society, where we provide monthly drop-in session for individuals living with a form of Autism. The individuals experience the world different compared to “Neurotypical Individual” they can have communication difficulties, as well as socialising. My time with this organisation has continued to develop my methods of communicating with patients within line off their needs.

Successfully completing a Nursing degree, I not only want to gain knowledge, but I would like to also learn a new way of thinking. I am very aware that no two situations are alike, and that patients can present with a variety of symptoms, which would require a mixture of different approaches. I am keen to gain practical knowledge, and to learn how to work co-operatively with other health professions, which entail provide the most successful, person centred care to the patient.
