My Motivation to Study Finance and Accounting

Accounting was first introduced to me by a family member who was working towards being a chartered accountant. After explaining his role at work, I realized this was something I was incredibly interested in and therefore began to conduct my own research on the career path of a chartered accountant. I believe my education, personal abilities and love for numbers are all qualities in which make me a suitable candidate to begin a career in accounting and finance.

I am eager to gain a thorough understanding of finance and accounting while embarking on the journey to becoming a professionally qualified chartered accountant. Studying Level 3 Business has given me a true insight into finance and accounting, increasing my passion for the subject while allowing me to develop a range of skills in which I can utilize at university and work. Studying units such as Personal and Business Finance has highlighted the role and importance of accounting within a business as well as in an individual’s personal life, allowing me to understand the function of money and the significance of managing it. To broaden my knowledge on the subject further I have read a number of books such as Rich Dad Poor Dad in which helped me recognise the importance of financial education, increasing my desire to study the subject.

Outside of academic life, I am currently working part-time at Haywards Fine Dining Restaurant. My role at Haywards has helped me develop a number of skills, a significant one being adaptability. I am aware the accounting industry is vastly dynamic and therefore my ability to adapt quickly, viewing new challenges as an opportunity to learn, will be incredibly useful.

I also understand well developed interpersonal skills are crucial within the finance and accountancy field to ensure one can successfully work in a team and interact with clients, as well as establish profitable relationships when it comes to meeting new people and networking. My communication skills have always been strong, developed throughout school and extracurricular activities, however, I gained experience in communication with colleagues and clients through working a number of jobs from the age of 14 to present time. At 14 years old I began to coach gymnastics, trampolining and cheerleading. This role required me to lead a group of athletes, aiding their improvement, growth, and success within their sport, and provided a great foundation for me to develop my interpersonal skills further.

Additionally, I have involved myself in a variety of activities throughout the years including athletics, trampolining and gymnastics, enjoying the challenges and social aspects that come with sports. I was a competitive cheerleader for 5 years (from 2013-2018) and managed to achieve numerous Regional, National and International Champion titles with my team. Cheerleading contributed to my growth as a teenager, teaching me a range of skills in which I still apply in everyday life. I was taught to have a strong work ethic, teamwork, commitment, and accountability; all skills in which I believe will be particularly valuable in university and my career in finance.

In addition to this, I have taken it upon myself to learn Spanish. Although it has been a challenge, I feel the ability to speak another language will be extremely beneficial in both social and professional aspects of life. With my determination and love for the language, I know I will succeed in learning to speak Spanish fluently.

As an individual, I have always aspired to higher education and am looking forward to the challenges of university. I am confident the skills I have acquired as well as the skills I will develop at university will successfully aid my journey to become a professionally qualified chartered accountant.
