For years, doctors have been prohibited due to the law from helping patients to take their own lives. A terminally ill patient should have the right to decide if they have had enough. By legalizing euthanasia, also referred to as physician assisted suicide, tremendous misery and pain of patients can be saved. Not only would the patients suffering end, but all loved ones wouldn't have to suffer through watching someone they care about die, not knowing when that day might be. A person should be allowed to control their life. It should be your right as a human being.Imagine your laying in a hospital hooked up to numerous machines.
Doctors and nurses are coming in constantly to check up on you while your trying to get what little sleep you can through the constant pain. Living while your body is dying. On top of that you’re suffering from side effects from countless drugs.. The doctors have given you no chance of survival; and death is sure to come, it’s just a matter of when. You’ve said your goodbyes; you’ve come to terms with dying and are ready to move on and be free of all the agony.
Shouldn’t you be allowed to die in peace and suffer no longer? Further, a dying person’s physical suffering can be most unbearable to that person’s immediate family. Waiting endlessly for the day they finally pass. Medical technology has already failed to save them. Successful or not, someone will have the pay the bill. The cost is sometimes too much for the terminally ill’s family. The pain of losing someone with the stress of money is a terrible burden. With every day loved ones wait in agony, the bill they have to pay is going up.
The right to assisted suicide is an inherent right which does not have to be given to the individual. It is a liberty which cannot be denied because those who are dying might want to use this liberty as a way to pursue their happiness. Choosing the right to assisted suicide would be a final choice in the dying life. They will not be seen as people who are waiting to die but as human beings making one final active choice in their lives. If all a doctor is doing is prescribing medication to a terminally ill patient, after they have met the proper requirements and have been given the necessary information to make an informed decision on ending their lives or not.
Shouldn’t they be allowed to do so through those guaranteed rights the Constitution gives us? The doctor is not the one who is committing a murder, for they are not the ones administering the drugs to the patient. The patient is the ones who takes them of their own free will, they have decided to end their life with dignity instead of agonizing pain they suffer physically and watching their loved ones in emotional pain.
