Have you ever suffered from discrimination? Nowadays discrimination was reduced than past. However some people continue to suffer from racial discrimination.
By the way, what is discrimination? Discrimination is treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against a person who is part of group, class, or category that this person belongs. It includes age, color, disability, ethnicity, familiar status, gender identity, genetic characteristics, marital status, nationality, race, region, sex and sexual orientation. These are some kind of discrimination. If you said something to opponent about any one of the above mentioned, and hurt the opponent, it might be a discrimination. For example, in the elementary school when someone said bad thing or put someone away of a group, it is obviously bullying. Bullying is a kind of discrimination too. But elementary school students don’t know that is discrimination. Also some another person doesn’t know. In this essay I’m going to talk about racial discrimination.
When I was an elementary school student, in my class came a transfer student from China. Well, when a transfer student come to your class many people is curious about that student. By the other hand, somebody do other thing. As you know it was bullying. It is normal for school life. However in my case was different. I suffered temporarily from discrimination. For Japanese people I am foreigner. So they treated me different. I was called by my color. All of it occurred until I had 8 or 9 years old. Of course I don’t like this treatment. Fortunately I had some good friends who help me and treat equal. I was saved by them. Day by day the people who do bullying me changed. At finally all of them became good friends for me.
Racism existed during the 19th century as ‘scientific racism’, which attempted to provide a racial classification of humanity. In 1775 Johann Blumenbach divided the world’s population into five groups according to skin color (Caucasians, Mongols, etc.), positing the view that the non-Caucasians had arisen through a process of degeneration. By the 19th century, racism had matured and spread around the world. In many countries, leaders began to think of the ethnic components of their own societies, usually religious or language groups, in racial terms and to designate “higher” and “lower” races. Those seen as the low-status races, especially in colonized areas, were exploited for their labour, and discrimination against them became a common pattern in many areas of the world. The expressions and feelings of racial superiority that accompanied colonialism generated resentment and hostility from those who were colonized and exploited, feelings that continued even after independence. Racism elicits hatred and distrust and precludes any attempt to understand its victims. For that reason, most human societies have concluded that racism is wrong, at least in principle, and social trends have moved away from racial discrimination. Many societies have begun to combat institutionalized racism by denouncing racist beliefs and practices and by promoting human understanding in public policies, as does the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, set forth by the United Nations in 1948. In the United States, racism came under increasing attack during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and ’60s, and laws and social policies that enforced racial segregation and permitted racial discrimination against African Americans were gradually eliminated.
I asked to my English teacher, Japanese friends and foreign friends some questions. I want to know what things them about other people have different culture, skin, language etc. When I knew the result I was so surprised. All of them laughed when I asked them and always said “Of course”. That impressed me. Now almost people could accept foreign culture. However, few years ago a little number of people accept foreign culture. Accept foreign culture means accept foreigners too. I’m happy to heard they answers.
Some people doesn’t know that somebody is suffering by race discrimination. Nowadays almost of this was decrease. But actually in some where someone are suffered. Could you believe it? Exist some law which ban do discrimination. However all people don’t obey the law. Can you affirm that you will not do bullying or discrimination to another person? I think that is difficult. We are human. We do bad things. I suffered by bullying. But I also do it. What we will do? It is simple! We need to correct the person who do bullying or discrimination. You also don’t do bullying nor discrimination. Try to accept the other one. Talk with the person. I think that you will find new friendship. The world is changing step by step to good way. We need your collaboration.
