Everyday our moral compass and whether justice and equality exist in society is questioned. I want to overcome issues that occur in current affairs such as racial and gender inequalities in the workplace. I recognized my interest in law at secondary school where I studied R v Dudley & Stephens. It made me ask do our morals influence law or does law influence our morals? This question captivated me to study law at higher education as I want to understand the networks which form and facilitate our lives. From my perspective, law is one of the most powerful forms of knowledge as it can alter the lives of individuals and impact society. The diverse nature of law is one of the reasons why I wish to study it as it provides pathways where I can call upon critical thinking, analysis and debating skills used in the profession.
In October 2017, I enrolled on the Blake Morgan prime work experience programme. This gave me an insight into the role and expectations required in the legal profession. During that time I discovered, I am particularly keen on property and employment law as these were the most compelling due to the captivating nature of the cases. Throughout the placement, I was involved in legal research, meetings and document review which, enabled me to want to pursue a career in law as the experience gave me an insight into the role of a Solicitor. Moreover, I have engaged in extracurricular activities held at college; as I am a member of the Debate Society this has allowed me to discuss current worldwide issues and work on my debating skills which would be useful in mooting. I have also sat in viewing galleries at local courts, which gave me an indication of contentious law and the legal system.
The combination of subjects I have chosen to study at A Level were purposely chosen to prepare me for a law degree, as well as being subjects I take an interest in. Law in particular, has given me the opportunity to acquire knowledge in some subject areas in preparation for university. As well as giving me the foundation to discover my genuine interest, it has also allowed me to take on complex information and construct it into logical arguments.
Studying our social system in Sociology has enabled me to understand diverse perspectives and form persuasive arguments. In addition, English Literature has developed my analytical and linguistic skills through the variety of different novels studied and essays that are required in the course. These skills would be helpful when proceeding a legal profession. Fine art involved me being meticulous which is relevant when analyzing a case. To supplement my interest in law, my Extended Project involved a comparison of inquisitorial and adversarial systems used in criminal law, by doing so I was able to highlight some issues within our own legal system and uncover ways to improve ours in order to provide justice.
I also read Richard Susskind’s ‘The End of Lawyers?’. The way Susskind depicts ongoing technological revolutions within the legal market is captivating. The book changed my perspective and gave me an awareness of challenges I may face as a lawyer. My non-academic interests involve fitness and animal rights, both of which I am passionate about as they allow me to become a more decisive and ethically minded individual. My creative interests involve Art and Textiles, where both allow me to express my artistic flair.
In the future, I hope to take relevant experience obtained through my university experience and grow within the profession to make my aspirations of becoming a Lawyer a reality, as I want to impact the lives of individuals through my legal work. I am a student with a strong work ethic who is motivated by personal challenges. I feel a degree in law will be a great foundation for a prosperous career in the future, in whatever field that may lead to.
