An estimated 22% of primary schools, 19% of junior high schools, and 10% of high schools currently require uniforms, and this trend will continue to increase at a rapid rate. This trend shows that school Uniforms are gaining popularity nationwide in the United States. Uniforms are clothes that represent a group of people or a school. However, opponents of school uniforms, claim uniforms are not affordable. Many Public schools are leading towards uniforms to help improve their schools and students overall. Uniforms can help emphasize studying in school, leading students to concentrate more on their classes than what they are wearing. Uniforms can block out other distractions like being fashionable and focusing on people's appearances. School is a setting to learn and not a place to see who is most fashionable. Therefore Uniforms should be worn in Public schools because it helps prepare students for proper attire in professional careers, increase attendance, and decreases bullying.
Firstly, Uniforms can help students prepare for the professional attire requirements in the workforce. After students complete their education, they will generally start working. When people start working, most companies require their employees to wear uniforms, whether the uniforms are provided or employees buy the standard dress shirt and suit attire. Public schools should require students to wear uniforms, and it would help the students get into the habit of wearing uniforms daily. 'Uniforms bring to mind workers like police officers, firefighters, and factory workers, but company uniforms work in almost any work setting, including offices. Most work settings set a dress code requirement for employees that specifies the type of clothing that is allowed.' The source shows us how a variety of jobs requires uniforms from restaurants to offices, showing the importance of uniforms in work settings. Since wearing uniforms is so prevalent in many jobs, public schools should give students insight and the experience of wearing uniforms. Meaning wearing school uniforms prepares students for dress code requirements in possible future careers.
Furthermore, uniforms can help public schools improve student attendance. Attending school is essential, especially since students need to come to school to learn. Public schools should concentrate on improving attendance, and it can help improve students' academic performances. One way public schools can improve attendance is by introducing uniforms to their schools. ‘School counties in the South have seen attendance increases of over 20 percent from the first five years of implementing school uniform policies’. The source shows that simply introducing uniforms can help public schools improve attendance rates. Uniforms can help save time in the mornings when getting dressed; students won't have to think about what they should wear and can just promptly put on their uniforms effortlessly. 'Some students can save up to 30 minutes each morning simply because the expectations of how they should look have been laid out for them in advance'. The source shows uniforms can save students time in the mornings when getting dressed due to students already knowing what they can wear. The increase in attendance is due to students not worrying about being fashionable and concentrate more on getting to school on time. So overall-wearing uniforms can help students' improve attendance by cutting out distractions and putting an emphasis on attending school.
In addition, uniforms can help decrease bullying in public schools. Bullying in public schools is prevalent; bullying is unwanted verbal or physical abuse upon others. If students wear uniforms, they will not be judged on what they wear and are less likely to be picked on by bullies. Bullies tend to pick on other kids based on the type of cloth they wear, usually based on name-brand clothes like Nike, Adidas, and other big-name brands. If all students wear uniforms, then bullies wear uniforms meaning the bullies look closely the same in terms of clothing like other students. 'Seven out of ten students think uniforms helps them to 'fit-in' at school, and 46 percent of students believe uniforms make bullying less likely to occur in school'. The source explains how uniforms keep a level field for everyone looking the same, showing us that uniforms can help create a bully-free environment in schools, where students feel like they can fit-in.
Uniforms can also help students not worry about the clothes they are wearing compared to their peers making school feel more comfortable around other students. Being bullied has a negative correlation on attendance, meaning that as bullying increases, student attendance in schools can decreases. Bullying students not only affects students' attendance but can lead to students to drop out of school, which should not happen. Wearing uniforms not only leads to students being less bullied but can help increase attendance for those students who are in fear of being bullied in school. If wearing uniforms can help create a positive environment where students are not in fear of being bullied, adding to another great reason why public schools should require uniforms.
Moreover, opponents of school uniforms believe that uniforms can be more expensive compared to regular clothes. I believe school uniforms decrease the cost of clothing due to parents only needing to buy, on average, six uniforms for each day of the week and a backup. While if parents bought regular clothes, they would need to purchase multiple sets of clothes for each season of the year, adding to the cost of clothing, therefore, making it more expensive than uniforms. According to the National Survey of School Leaders Reveals 2013 School Uniform Trends, found that '77 percent estimated the average cost of school uniforms per student, annually was less than $150'. Showing us if this study is accurate, uniforms are less expensive than regular clothes proving school uniforms are not costly as opponents of uniforms might think them to be. Also, just like regular clothes, uniforms can be handed down to younger siblings as well as making good use of the uniforms while saving on the costs of buying new uniforms for siblings.
In conclusion, public schools should mandate students to dress in uniforms. If students were required to wear uniforms, there would be fewer cases of students bullying, students are less likely to miss school, leading them to learn more in school, and students would be better prepared in the future for the dress code requirements in the workforce. A school is a place of learning, requires students to dress in uniforms to make the educational process better. If students wore uniforms, they would focus less on being fashionable and put more effort and concentration in school. Since the uniforms can help students concentrate more on learning, this can lead them to perform better in their classes. People should want our schools to require uniforms so students can perform better, leading them to get better jobs and opportunities. Students are the future schools need to invest in them so they can help create a better world for the future. Schools and students can gain so much growth and opportunities from uniforms. Schools need to implement this idea of uniforms so people can see the benefits which can lead other schools to follow in this direction.
