The book Raven’s Peak by Lincoln Cole is a supernatural mystery revolving around the sudden insanity of a small town with the same name as the book. A woman named Abigail is called upon to investigate the problem and a man name Haatim is whirled into it when she saves him. The two must now figure out and resolve the issue going on in Raven’s Peak.
What I enjoyed about Raven’s Peak was the choice of how much to describe at any moment. It allows the readers to have a little more imagination in some places, or places them so entirely accurately in other places. The fighting scenes were also easy to follow and not drawn out more than needed. What I enjoyed most about Raven’s Peak was the interaction between Abigail and Haatim, their stark yet similar personalities worked well. Even when the situation was for them to be butting heads a little bit, it felt in character and not forced.
What I didn’t fully enjoy about Raven’s Peak was that the book started really strong in the prologue, beginning chapters kept you a bit intrigued, but somewhere before the middle it sort of felt like it was slow. However, after about the halfway point, it did pick up again and was very enjoyable after that. My least favorite thing was Abigail’s ability to give personal information to Haatim, even though her whole character was supposed to not be vulnerable in that sense. I understand that it is a bit of a shorter book but I wished that there would have been some way for her to open up rather than it being as sudden as it was. I would give Raven’s Peak 3 out of 4 stars. I give it this rating because while it did have some things I wish were a little different, I quite enjoyed it. It is a nice, short first volume and I would recommend that people who are interested in mystery and the supernatural being very real in a story take a look. It’s a good book for readers first getting into the genre and wanting a taste, and those who are seasoned readers of the genre.
All in all, I really did enjoy the book and I definitely recommend. As with all books, it is not perfect but it is worth a look into at least. The characters work well together and the scene setting is done very well. Raven’s Peak is a great addition to the genre and I applaud the author for writing such a good supernatural mystery book in about 200 pages.
