Who Told You That You Were Naked? is a very unique kind of book and it leads you into a very complex maze. It makes you realize that human beings are not able to comprehend their own selves.
If you don’t agree with my statement then answer the following question: Do you know the meaning of death? Most of you will say: Yes. However, can you differentiate between physical, spiritual and relational death? These are the concepts that most of us are not aware of. This book explains such unique concepts.
“Who told you that you were naked?” is a question asked by God from Adam. This refers to the incident of disobedience that occurred on Adam’s part. In the light of this disobedience, Adam lost his clothes and he was hesitant to come in front of God. The author explains that the real reason for Adam’s hesitation was not his nakedness, rather it was his fear that God might punish him due to his disobedience.
The book puts emphasis on the point that our perceptual feelings have a great impact on our behaviour. Certain times, we are forced to act in a particular way in order to satisfy people who might be important to us. Secondly, it explains that sometimes our wrong perceptions result into dangerous consequences. The book shares different events of Jesus, Cain, Abel, Jared, and Mosses in order to explain the concept of faith. The author introduces us to two concepts of faith: little faith and real faith. Interesting insights are given regarding these two approaches. I enjoyed the personal experiences of the author and I wished there were more of them. These experiences engaged me to a great extent. Secondly, I came to realize that human beings often try to envelop their incompleteness by different factors such as money, property, status etc. The fact that is often neglected is that the above concept is a perceptual feeling and has no basis in reality.
The moment we understand this, we will know ourselves better. I felt that this was an important lesson which this book taught me. One factor which I found a bit uncomfortable was that this book is directed towards a limited audience. People of certain religions might find it a bit contradicting with their own beliefs. This is based on the fact that different events from bible are available in most of the chapters.
Overall, I like this book. I will rate it 3 out of 4 stars. The reason for this rating is that I found the book very interesting and motivating. It provoked me to think about life in detail. Secondly, the vocabulary used is outstanding. I learnt many new words while reading the book. I didn’t give it 4 out of 4 stars because certain people might be uncomfortable reading it due to difference of religion. I would recommend everyone to read this book. Moreover, if it contradicts with your beliefs, try to dig out the important lessons regarding life and forget the rest.
