Throughout history, Anesthesia was invented to prevent surgery patients from feeling pain. Patients that are given anesthetics may feel sleepy which in return, makes them more easy to operate during surgery. Based on the results, Anesthesia is best for all according to the Utilitarian perspective. The different types of Anesthesia can help benefit the whole community and help make pain more manageable for all patients. To begin, Anesthesia was invented in the 1700s and 1800s to help treat patients during surgeries (Arkell, 2011). There are three main types of anesthetics. Local Anesthesia, Regional Anesthesia and General Anesthesia (Husney, 2014). Anesthesia is used to block out pain and help surgeons operate on patients during surgery. The types of anesthesia that will be given to patients will depend on their previous health problems and the type of surgery that the patient will be undergoing (Husney, 2014).
The different kind of Anesthetics being used is very important for the patient, as it relates to what kind of surgery the patient is going to receive. For example, local anesthesia is used to block out pain or numb out pain in a small area for small surgeries. Regional Anesthesia is used to block out pain in a larger part of the body for bigger and more serious surgeries (Husney, 2014). Also, the outcome of Anesthesia will be good for all patients. Thus, utilitarians will support the idea of Anesthesia is best for all. Furthermore, patients will be much happier with the results with anesthesia than no anesthesia. It can completely block off pain from a certain area which, allows doctors to perform more surgeries (Kulkarni, 2016). The use of anesthetics also allow anesthesiologists to hone their skills and help manage patients more effectively. Some might disagree with Anesthesia being best for all. Although anesthesia has been proven to work effectively, it may also come with some serious side effects. The case of death can happen to some patients due to allergic reactions, insufficient supply of blood from going to major organs and difficulty breathing (Hares, 2017).
Thus, the outcome of Anesthesia may not always be good. However, the risk level of fatal reactions are so low, it rarely happens (“How Safe is Anesthesia? 5 Things You Should Know”, 2017). Besides, there is always anesthesiologists in the room with the patient when the surgery is in effect (“What is an Anesthesiologist, n.d). Anesthesiologists monitors the patient’s blood levels, heart beat rhythm, and other body functions (Husney, 2014). Anesthesiologists are important when a surgery is taking place. These anesthesiologists make sure the surgery goes smoothly and without causing any damages to the patient. Usage of Anesthesia has been proven from time and time again to work. Without modern Anesthesia, patients of surgeries might still be biting down on sticks (Arkell, 2011).
Since the outcome and the results of Anesthesia pleasures the community, Utilitarians believe anesthesia is best for all. Many patients undergo surgeries with Anesthesia each year and many are happy with the results. Anesthesia not only benefits the whole community but it also helps make surgeries much easier for the doctors and the patients. Through the eyes of a utilitarian, Anesthesia should be given to all patients of surgeries and is best for all individuals of the community.
