Safety Management Systems is a comprehensive management system that has been designed for managing safety elements in the workplace. The system is designed for safety concepts and home. Intentionally designing and building a safety system to prevent potential injuries, deaths, damage to property, equipment loss, and lawsuits Accidents are some of the concerns in any business, mainly individuals that deal with heavy as well as refined equipment, but organizational dysfunction also plays an essential role. In an effort to combat these dangers are associated with safety management systems have been accepted by businesses to make sure the safety of workers is the main concern. In 1968, President Lyndon B Johnson proposed an industrial health and safety bill to legislative body but was turned down by business leaders. A year later, President Nixon presented two bills and after much negotiation the OSH Act was passed in 1970. The Act created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a branch dedicated to setting and enforcing health and safety standards. Collected with the efforts of employers, workers, safety and health specialists, unions and advocates, OSHA and its government associates have affectedly improved workplace safety, reducing work-related deaths and injuries by more than 65 percent. OSHA purpose is to improve the health and safety of working conditions and also to make certain all workers are paying attention while on the job. OSHA’s mission is “To guarantee safe and healthy working environment for working men and women. OSHA is gradually more focused on safety management methods of compliance, so applying a safety management system under one of the established standard training, communication and other actions have been establish for a safety culture. Safety management systems are designed to be comprehensive and manage safety first principles in the workplace. A safety system has a process that attempts to decrease hazards incidents and make sure that the workplace is safe. Welfare of others is a serious factor in any business and it’s very important that all employees buy-in to the safety program. After all, workers are your greatest asset and the company is responsible for putting the correct procedures and standards are in place to help protect them as well as the customers.

A Safety Management System is a part of a management that deals with a set of work practices and procedures with the purpose of observing and training safety throughout operations. The system is often established to assist team associates to identify risky situations in addition to developing procedures to manage those risks. It also encourages workers to take responsibility for the safety of their job and to ensure that all team associates are aware of their safety duties.

Safety management have six elements which includes; an exit plan in case of emergencies, safety guidelines, procedures and development, training and induction, monitoring, supervision, and reporting. Safety policies and procedures is to guide and direct all workers to work safely and avoid injury, to themselves and others. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Guidelines, whose responsibility is that employers carry out assessments to remove or reduce risks. Those who hire five or more people should record the significant findings of a risk assessment. It is however not a requirement that insignificant risks should be recorded. The Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974 places an accountability on employers to make sure the health, safety and welfare of employees are being used. This have to be done to ensure that the safety procedure of the company will be done correctly. Companies are also required to check in with representatives from trade unions going over materials that deals with health and safety in the workplace. Companies who have more than five employees must have a written health and safety policy which should be brought to that attention of the employees. The manager not only has to make a health and safety policy but it is clear that it remains to be brought to the attention of the workers and it is important that workers should know its contents. Talks with trade union reps are also mandatory. Managers are responsible for ensuring that any person who is working at the time knows about the safety policy, and safety evacuation plan, and make sure that the work establishment is not dangerous. Equipment don’t pose any danger to people who use them safely. As a manager, one is obligated to ensure that the machines are properly maintained and whoever is using them cannot be exposed to any harm while performing his or her responsibilities. The section could also require that the manager ensure that the employees are properly dressed and observe the laid down safety regulations at the work place (Stuhlmacher & Douglas, 2001).

Health and safety practices are known to enhance morale at work, improve innovation, bring about teamwork and avert the possible risk factors. . If an emergency or a safety need does arise, it is beneficial that systems and policies are in place. This will not only avoid confusion and lack of readiness and education, it will minimize injuries, accidents, and liabilities. Safety assurance is one of the pillar of the safety management system and organization must incorporate analysis, assessment and management review to make certain that safety goals have been met. Big business with the safety routine of observing, audits, investigations, root cause analysis, employee reporting, data analysis, and preventive and corrective actions. Eliminate or reduce risk to workers and other involved parties who may possibly be exposed to work-related well-being and safety risks associated with your company's actions.
