The first uniforms were believed to become more popular in public schools in the early 2000s. In 2015, over 150 students in Europe were sent home from school for wearing the wrong pieces of clothing in their uniforms. Uniforms can affect students by missing out on lessons due to wearing the wrong shoes. School uniforms can also help students by better preparing them when the time comes to get a job considering, they will have already experienced dressing more formal. The debate over whether students should have been required by schools to wear uniforms is a very controversial topic. The situation is over whether school uniforms should be added to more public schools and whether they have a positive effect. This is a problem because people are getting in trouble for wearing what the school thinks is the wrong clothes. In 2015 a European talk show called “Loose Women” debated about the school uniforms debate they shared that “over 200 students in Europe were sent home from school for wearing the wrong shoes and socks” (Loose Women).

Additionally, The today show stated the topic is over whether “Schools should be able to require uniforms”(Savannah Guthrie). As a matter of fact, some students are worried they will not be able to express themselves freely through their clothes. School Uniforms started to become more popular in public schools in the early 2000s. “Mandatory uniforms policies are found in public schools with a higher poverty”. School uniforms in the late 80s where found uncommon in most public schools until the 2000s. Actually, one in five US public schools required students to wear uniforms in the 2013-2014 school years. This means that school uniforms enforced in public schools increased over time from the 80s. After schools with notable crime in their schools enforced and added school uniforms the schools believed the uniforms kept crime rates lower. “ In Sparks middle school in Nevada introduced uniforms police data showed a 63% drop in police log reports and gang activity”. Think of all of the baggy clothing students could hide weapons or gang paraphernalia in their baggy sweatshirts and sweatpants. Therefore school uniforms could deter crimes and gang activity. School uniforms can invade the First amendment of having freedom.

School uniforms can restrict students freedom of expression throughout their clothes sounds like students are being invaded by their freedom all for uniforms. In fact, “The first amendment guarantees that everyone has the right to express themselves freely” Think of the war heroes who fought for freedom and those students can not even wear their preference of clothes. When school uniforms are included in schools students will not feel as self-conscious about what they have and other people have. School uniforms can keep students focused on their school work instead of their clothes (Robin Silverman). Actually, “a study in the University of Houston found that elementary school girls test scores increased by 5% after school uniforms were introduced” Schools want students to be themselves, but they can not when schools are choosing conformity in their schools. If schools teach students about these amazing heroes like Rosa Parks and Susan B. Anthony, then students can not express themselves freely in the hallways what the point of telling them about these amazing heroes? In conclusion “school uniforms promote conformity over individuality”. School uniforms are a very controversial topic,

The supporting side believes school uniforms will keep students more focused on their school work, not clothes and will make kids feel less self-conscious. The opposing side believes school uniforms will interfere with the first amendment and schools will choose conformity over the students. This debate could go on for quite a while without having someone's voice not heard. The future debate could change and have more public schools with standardized uniforms. This is extremely important to society because it could affect lots of people who have students. Which side do you choose the opposing side or the supporting side?
