Self Expression with The Help of T-shirts

T-shirts aren’t always the most appropriate forms of expression, but a very effective way individuals represent and express ideas along with beliefs. Although, t-shirts are a very simple and discrete way of expression, therefore, utilizing an individual’s thought process and opinion bases. Many individuals consider this unacceptable only because open entitlement upon freedom privileges in the United States. Obscurity and inappropriate beliefs are left to offend individuals whom do not share similar perspectives, especially in some social environments. Designs through expression usually represent music, political affiliation, and forms of personal preference. Expression at this level has been consistent for generations, but the generation with the most movement through expression is mine. Owning and wearing a shirt is one of the most underrated and unnoticed ways an individual can express opinion without engaging in conformation.

I am affiliated with a lot of different organizations and I own many shirts to represent that I am apart of these groups. This would classify as political. I am using my dress practices, specifically a t-shirt, to symbolize that I am connected with these people. I feel that this is an appropriate political exchange. Wearing a t-shirt to represent that you are a part of something larger than yourself is a fair depiction of who you are. By wearing these shirts I am showing people what I believe in and the people that I associate myself with. This can tell a lot about a person from first glace. T-shirts are an effective way of political exchange, but also an exchange of different individual ideas that get the point across quickly and concisely. I don’t consider this appropriate because it is able to cause preconceived thoughts by an individual that do not understand the perspective. Ideally this is not considered to be a good representation of an individual that doesn’t have an open mind, but many people are indeed this typical. Majority of the population would consider this person a rebel.

According, to the article The T-shirt: A rebel with a cause, “It was rebellious, because T-shirts were actually undergarments… It was a tough political statement.” The start of the t-shirt started with rebellion and this thought is still carried on today. Although this is my personal opinion, some may disagree that provoking opinions/statements are necessary to be rebellious and get a point across. When political exchange was used, most would have assumed it meant patronage, however, this word had multiple meanings.

While progressing into my college career, I have noticed the usage of t shirts in many ways through the collective population. This comes in means of representation, expressionism, and association. Keep in mind that this is not considered one of the most appropriate form, but many times this is the most effective manners for presentation in a college atmosphere. On numerous occasions; I have walked with, next to, or with different characters. In the way individuals choose to idealize themselves with clothing usually takes you back for a second glimpse, so what is a better way than with a t-shirt.
