Why do cases of sexual harassment and sexual assault continue to occur in our Army? Although, there is training to prevent this kind of behavior it still happens. Is training the problem of these incidents? We constantly receive briefings and training that make us aware of SHARP. The Army has no tolerance when it comes to sexual misconduct.
SHARP stands for Sexual Harassment Assault Response and Prevention. It is a program placed by the Army to inform all soldiers how to respond and prevent. There is also an Army regulation that gives the commander guidelines to follow. The elimination of sexual harassment within a unit begins with a policy of aggressive and progressive training to identify and prevent inappropriate behavior. It is the responsibility of everyone to prevent and respond to sexual harassment.
Problems reside in the system of reporting SHARP-related incidents. Commanders have full authority whether or not to move forward with prosecutions for sexual assault. Advocates say it stops victims from reporting misconduct over bias and fear of retaliation.
