I have always been keen to discover what makes society work and how the behavior of people affects society. Sociology helps me recognize the behavior of people, their theories and their status as well as my own and here I will show some examples of sociology in everyday life. Pursuing Sociology at a more advanced level will present me with a much wider understanding into a large number of complex situations and ways to advance ideas using my own initiative. As sociology is such a varied topic, broadening my academic work to further education is an exciting possibility that will enable me to evolve my view on society.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

Sociology plays a fundamental role in society, as it is used to inform the government on social problems in sectors such as crime, poverty and education. This then influences the government to improve and change legislation; consequently, sociology becomes a massive part of my day to day life. The vital and intriguing way sociology plays a part in society means I feel a strong need to investigate it further. Additionally, I have always questioned the motive as to why people operate in the style they do; not only how we build the society that we live in, but how it builds and transforms us. It was not before I started an AS level in Sociology four years ago, that I started to identify this passion as 'Sociology'. Heated discussion among the lecture room provided to me the freedom to investigate opinions over a wide number of sociological viewpoints. For example, I find Feminism fascinating, as it brings together the adverse controversy in society that we would otherwise overlook.

My work experience in 1610 as a lifeguard and at Lloyd and Whyte an Insurance Company, informed me of the value of communication skills and the need to work independently but also in a team when necessary. My experience in 1610 granted me the opportunity to come across customers and staff from a broad range of backgrounds and from diverse areas of society, plus, improving my ability to work in high pressured situations and complete any given task efficiently. While my experience at the Lloyd and Whyte Insurance Company informed me of the importance of communication and customer service, additionally, it gave me an insight of how a business function and how it develops in an ever-changing society. I have recently begun some part-time work as a mystery shopper. I deem that this will allow me to gain experience in research methods as I will compile data in an investigative way. Other activities that fill up my free time, include, playing football for my local team and surfing in Devon and Cornwall.

A Sociology degree will encourage and enhance my love for discussion but additionally, it will strengthen my ability to think quickly and analytically. The expansion and progression of Sociology are exciting, and I am primed to play a key role in this ever expanding-subject. Sociology enables me the ability and knowledge to accomplish this. My main ambition after completing the degree is to become a solicitor. I will do this by studying a Law conversion course and then a legal practise course followed by a training contract at a law firm. The reason I have opted for the non-law degree route is because my main passion is Sociology, so I would prefer to study this at the advanced level and then convert this course into law through further study. Plus going into the industry to law this way leaves my options open to other careers that I potentially could be interested in for example social research, social work and development work. To conclude, studying Sociology will be very valuable in the establishment of many accessible career opportunities in the future.
