The only person responsible for attacking another individual in sexual assault is a perpetrator, but all of us have the ability to look after each other and keep safe at all times. Whether it’s giving someone a ride home from a party or speak to a person directly who is engaging in uncalled behavior, anyone can help avoid sexual violence. The way I would describe bystander intervention is that it’s a situation where someone who isn’t perhaps directly involved but should step in and change the outcome. Stepping in may give the person you’re associated with get to a better and safe place or leave the situation it involves them in. You do not have to be a hero or even stand out to make a big difference in someone’s life. Take steps to protect someone who might be at risk and do what you can handle. (Technical, n.d.)

The reason sexual assault occurs because individuals decide to sexual contact other personal by the use of force, intimidation, threats, or abuse of rank structure or when the victim cannot consent or does not. The following specific UCMJ offenses include: rape, sexual assault, unwanted sexual contact, abusive sexual contact, or attempts to start these offenses, under Army regulation 27-14 (Article 15).

It’s important to realize that your actions can impact tremendously. In many situations, bystanders prevent incidents such as a sexual assault from happening. If you see something happening, react as soon as possible and notify someone immediately. Sexual harassment/assault will not be tolerated in the military or any work force. Army leadership at all parts of the chain of command will maintain an environment fit for all personal and have respect for human dignity. By minimizing or dismissing the ones who prey upon others should go to a creation institution or jail.
