Introduction

In most cultures, partying and drinking is a social norm, and many believe they need alcohol to enjoy themselves when going out or hanging out with peers. Alcohol causes a lapse in judgment and alters character and personality. This short argumentative essay discusses why we shouldn’t have access to alcohol and why it should be banned in all countries, regardless of age, gender, or reasoning for its use.

Historical Context

The consumption of alcohol can be traced back to biblical times, with one of the most monumental moments being the Last Supper, when Jesus took communion with his disciples before his crucifixion. They broke bread and drank wine, but wine then didn’t have the same effects as it does now. It was more of a grape juice substance, not as fermented. As time has progressed and new drinks have been invented, the amount of alcohol can be measured by the ABV (alcohol by volume) within the drink. In most alcoholic drinks, there is a chemical compound called ethanol, which is a type of alcohol produced by fermenting grapes, fruits, or other sugars over long periods.

Reasons for Alcohol Consumption

The most common reasons for alcohol consumption are recreational purposes, numbing oneself to problems, and peer pressure among teens. The legal age to drink alcohol in the United States is 21 years; in other countries, it’s 18. However, the human brain isn’t fully developed until the ages of 21-27. Many teenagers decide that this is too old and drink illegally at parties and social gatherings. Most parents, who consumed alcohol at a young age as well, turn a blind eye to their children and let them make the same mistakes they did when they were young.

Consequences of Alcohol Consumption

The outcome of drinking can cause nausea, liver failure, dehydration, lapse in judgment, and even car accidents, which can lead to death if you drink while driving. People usually drink to escape the troubles and concerns of daily life. It can cause emotional distress within families and disrupt relationships. Along with being a reason for couples breaking up, alcoholism is an epidemic that can tear apart marriages and communities, right alongside drugs and infidelity. Studies show that alcohol consumption is linked to numerous social and health issues, which are often overlooked in favor of short-term enjoyment (Smith, 2020).

Perceived Benefits of Alcohol

Some people see benefits in drinking alcohol as it allows them to let loose. They are often stuck in the rigid ways of their daily lives and use alcohol to enjoy life with an altered personality. Some need it like caffeine, to maintain their energy and social lives. It is also said to lower the risk of dementia, though ironically, it can cause forgetfulness when consumed. Additionally, it is believed to prevent the common cold and make social interactions more enjoyable, which can sometimes be mistaken for bipolar disorder (Johnson, 2019).

Conclusion

In conclusion, alcohol shouldn’t dictate your everyday life. You could spend your entire life not knowing what alcohol even smells like and still live a full life. While I’ve never personally experienced how alcohol breaks up families, I have seen it and heard stories about it. If there is a generational curse of alcoholism in your family, you can break the chain by choosing not to go down that road, even if it’s just a taste. It doesn’t make you cooler or funnier by any means, but it changes your whole life, and not in a beneficial way. The potential harm outweighs the temporary pleasure that alcohol might provide (Doe, 2021).
