The escalating cost of living and societal pressure has forced modern-day people to be more industrious than their peers in the previous generation. To obtain set goals, people are forced to work for long hours. Students are increasingly spending more time in libraries and study rooms to attain high academic grades. Consequently, the desire to be successful in all realms of life has resulted in people being deprived of their sleep, by and large sleep deprivation results in negative such as a decline in academic performance, poor focus on job-related tasks and causes accidents on roads.
Contrary to popular beliefs sleep deprivation is detrimental to academic performance, Research has established that lack of adequate sleep results in the damage neurocognitive that are instrumental in the processing of new information. Rather than attain knowledge the lack of sleep may jeopardize the ability for a student to grasp the concepts taught in sleep. Consequently, students who sleep for long hours are likely to register better performance than their sleep-deprived counterparts.
Sleep deprivation is associated with the poor focus on the execution of job-related tasks. Therefore sleep-deprived are likely to be less productive in the workplace. In particular, they may take too much time to complete simple tasks. Besides, sleep-deprived workers are more likely to make mistakes and errors compared to workers who have had better sleep. The quality of output of sleep-deprived individuals is likely to be low.
Sleep deprivation is a major cause of accidents on the road. Motorists who suffer from sleep deprivation may doze off when on highways. This may result in motorists experiencing fatal accidents. Whereas it is economically normal to work extra hours, the lack of sleep can be a security hazard to a motorist and other road users.
Supporters of sleep deprivation have argued that too much sleep breeds laziness. Thus, members of an industrious society should have only a little sleep. The hours freed from sleep should be used in the acquisition of knowledge and execution of job-related tasks. Consequently, a sleep-deprived nation would attain economic prosperity and intellectual advancement within a span of a few years. Whereas the proponents of sleep deprivation make a logical argument, they are oblivious of having inadequate sleep. In particular, Whereas sleep deprivation is beneficial in a short time, it is highly unsustainable in the long term.
In conclusion, sleep deprivation appears to be a headache for people in the twenty-first century. The debate of the hours that an individual should may continue to dominate debates for decades to come. Given the irreversible harm caused by sleep deprivation such as a decline in academic performance, the upsurge in car accidents, and a decline in productivity of workers, governments should encourage its citizens to have an adequate amount of sleep.
