Has anyone ever told you I think I’m a pretty good person so I’ll go to heaven. This kind of view is not biblical. No one is perfectly good. Today I will be making three points about the topic “Analyze and respond to the statement “I believe I will go to heaven because I have lived a pretty good life””:
What does this statement mean?.
Our best is not God’s best.
This is why we need Jesus.
So let’s go to my first point: What does this statement mean? What this statement is saying is that you don’t have to believe in God to be saved. All you have to be is a “good person”. And it when they say a good person, they mean a good person by the world’s standards. They might think well I haven’t committed and crimes, killed anyone, or cheated on my spouse. I’m a pretty good person. This what the world thinks is a good person. Now we know this is not a biblical view. This leads to my second point: Our best is not God’s best. Now the Bible says that we are sinful. We have a sin nature. The Bible describes our best as dirty fifthly rags. God wants holiness and because of our sin nature, we are not holy. Even little sins, Jesus says are wrong. So you may not cheat on your spouse, but Jesus says that looking on another person lustfully is committing adultery. So you haven’t killed anybody. Jesus says that hating someone in your heart is the same as murder. So we see that even when we think we are perfect, we aren’t really. So is there no hope for us? Yes there is hope for us. This leads to my third point: This is why we need Jesus. Because of our sin nature, we can’t save ourselves. But Jesus came and died for us. His sacrifice made it so as long as we repent of our sins and turn to Him, his grace cover us. He changes us. We are justified through Him. He also sanctifies us, and makes us new. His love for us was so much He died for us. So the answer to our sin is Jesus.
In conclusion, we have a sin nature. Our best can never be good enough. Thankfully, Jesus came and saved us and as long we repent and believe, we can be with Him. This is the Biblical view and we should want to tell others this so they can have the hope that we have.
